gavlister,if you are frustrated with the speeds, make a backup and then format your HD and do a clean install and then manually reinstall your apps. Nothing beats a fresh system - you will be amazed at the difference.

    Some more ideas:

    - Are you running some anti-virus software? Slowdowns have been reported with McAfee for instance.

    - Are you automatically connecting to some remote share or server? Network issues can cause delays.

    - Are you using third-part RAM? Check that it is well sitted and all recognized by SL. RAM check takes time.

    - Do you have peripherals connected? Disconnect all, shut down and reboot, test... If the speed is back try and plug them back one at a time.

That's all I can think of right now...

    Same here...

I have the exact same problem... Which only started after I upgraded to SL.
    WTF???

    Installed Appz:
    Office
    Firefox
    Thunderbird
    MSN Messenger
    Parralells & Vista Home Premium

That's it... The rest are Mac standard appz...

Whether it's connected to any peripherals or not, the result is the same.

    Edit1
From some research I established that Parallels may be my culprit. It's advised to uninstall and re-install. I have no other applications running in the background.
I'll try that sometime over the weekend and update you guys.

    Cheers

Thumbs up Parallels was the Culprit

Decided to not waste much time, did the unistall, re-install and upgrade of Parallels whilst watching CSI tonight.

    Shut-down took less than 5sec...

Rebooted... Scratched around the net and shut-down to confirm the problem was solved.
    Shut-down took less than 5sec.

    I think it's solved.
Maybe this post will be useful to someone out there having similar issues with SL.

I have exactly the same problem, but the uninstall and reinstall doesn't work for me...
    I have a Macbook Pro 13" late 2009, and use Parallels 5...
The Laptop runs perfectly on startup and shutdown when I don't have Parallels installed... But in the moment that I install it, it's a blame... more than a minute sometimes for the shutdown... Any of you have an idea to solve this?, please give me a hand men...

    Three things to do.

    1. Click on Apple menu.
    2. Click on System Preferences.
    3. Click on Accounts.
    4. Click on Login items.

    Remove all the Login items.

    Second,

    1. Open Finder window.
    2. CLick on Macintosh HD.
    3. Click on Library.
    4. Click on Startup items.
    5. Move login items to Trash.
    6. Restart the computer.

    If still having trouble,

    1. Insert Snow Leopard install disk.
    2. Shut down the computer.
    3. Turn computer on and press and hold down C key until booted to the screen to select language.
    4. Select English then continue.
    4. Click on Utilities menu.
    5. Click on Disc Utility.
    6. Click on Repair Disc - Do not click on Repair Disc Permissions.
After it is complete if there are any errors let me know.

    Then Close the window.
Click on Mac OS Installer menu
    Click on Quit Installer
    Click on Startup Disk
    Select internal hard drive
    Click Restart.

    Hope this helps.
