Macbook Pro Sleep Issues

Hello all,

I have been using Apple Computers for quite a long time now and this is the first time I have run into a problem and have no idea how to solve it. The back story is that I purchased this MBP about a month ago while I was in the US for a meeting.

I didn't have any problems with it while I was in the US, but when I got back to Dubai, the computer would often refuse to go to sleep properly. If I close the lid it locks up, but the light on the front remains on. If I try to manually put it to sleep through the Apple Menu the front light comes on. In both instances it does not pulse. It just remains bright. Of course at first I didn't notice this, so the battery would just completely drain.

When I finally figured out what was happening, I did quite a lot of research online to see what the issue was. iStat Pro was the first thing I ran into that could be causing the problem. So I removed it, but the problem persisted. I also removed any software I had that I thought could have been the culprit.

At this point I am down to only software that should be on the computer, the only major installations being Office, iWork, and Aperture.

Has anyone had a similar problem? If so can you help me in a way to fix this. I am really interested in trying to get this resolved.

And it's updated both in firmware and system software?

Everything is up to date on the computer.

I have recently changed out the RAM, thinking that could have been the problem, however the problem has persisted.

Just out of curiousity, open Terminal.app and paste this in:

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

What does it tell you?

I will certainly try that this evening when I get home. I am on my work computer now.

Thanks for the suggestion, and in response to earlier . . .

After reading up about the firmware, it is possible that it is not up to date.

So, my first priority is following the firmware installation instructions and then to the terminal as hanzo suggested.

I appreciate the help.

It tells me 3.

As far as I know that means that it is writing RAM to the HD prior to sleeping, right?

Just thought I would drop in here to post an update about the problem.

I took the MBP into the service center and they took a shot at diagnosing by just checking the symptoms of the problem. They are pretty sure that it is a logic board problem and as of now are still looking into it. They estimated 4 weeks if they need to replace the logic board. Luckily this justified me buying a new iMac.

All is going well with it, but I am having an issue with Aperture after I restored the system from a Time Machine backup, everything else works great.

It doesn't help though, since 3 was the expected result..
