Gmail - Mail

I have set up my mail to work with my gmail account. Most things are working fine.

But shouldn't any emails I delete in Mail be deleted from Gmail? I deleted loads and clicked Sync, although I don't think anything happened. Closed Mail, and reopend it and all the emails I deleted came back in

Should the emails deleted in mail, be deleted from Gmail too?

It is set up for IMAP, and works fine for on the ipod. found it very good, just seem to be having probs on setting it up on Mail on my MacBook.

I deleted it and reinstalled the gmail inside mail but have yet to test it out yet.

Will get back to you when I have tested it

I set it up as POP.
It doesn't erase anything from the servers.
Much easier than IMAP, IMHO.

Hey Benson,

The problem you have is that Google's implementation of IMAP is buggy and they do not follow a standard such as Washington's or Cyrus's implementation of IMAP. The reason why is because of Google's labeling system. The problem is that each IMAP folder is a label - so when you delete an email you are just removing the label.

In order to delete an email message you will have to physically move the message to the [Gmail]/Trash folder in the IMAP folders shown in the client. Once the e-mails are moved to Trash folder, it will be automatically purged by Google in 30 days. This can be configured on the client so it doesn't wait for 30 days.

Don't give up on IMAP - its a great protocol and I swear by it It's just Google's qwirly implementation.
