What is it you're going to convert between? I still use the latest VisualHub and it works great.

Handbrake. Hands down. Open source, and it will convert just about anything to anything. Subtitles, 5.1 surround, everything.

Handbrake is slow, and incapable of movie cut or even basic editing like cut/copy/paste. Its good for quick conversion maximum. For serious work look elsewhere pls.

I have used HandBrake and iSquint. Recently purchased iSkysoft Video Converter. $35. Pretty good one. Lots of choices. Plus it converts audio. Happy with it. iSkysoft Video Converter for Mac – Mac Video Converter, Convert video such as AVI, MOV, M2TS, MTS, MKV, FLV on Mac OS X

I use EvoM for my quick AppleTV Converts. Handbrake crashes for me all the time...

depends on what software you want

Free software 80% people go to handbrake and visualHub.

As to shareware, I am using aimersoft Total media converter for Mac. Not bad I guess. I tried iSkysoft , the free version before, and doesn't feel too much on it.

Also depends on what video format you want to convert. There is no software that can convert ALL video formats and DVDs on market now.
