spotlight - some assistance please

Okay, so I'm working away and I want to go to spotlight, I'm still fairly new so I use my mouse I click on the magnifying glass and invariably as I go down the list I move a little too far left and into the space of my next door menu item, in my case the clock, which then opens the clock menu as opposed to spotlight where I want to be. I know that you could argue that this is "lazy mousing" (great phrase that I must copyright it) , but does anyone know how I can create a bigger space for spotlight so that this stops happening or any other solution? You time and effort is appreciated.

Alex

I don't think there is a way to give it more space.
But you can use the shortcut instead.

Default is apple+space.

OOOOOOh, Fang, I got so excited when I saw it was you, as I was typing, I was thinking, "that fella phang, fanf fan, fanclub, flan thrower, fang, fang tooth, FANGPYRE, thats it, he will have the answer!!!!!! Thanks for the workaround, I just have to get used to using more keyboard shortcuts I know they will be better in the long run, thanks Fang, no more lazy mousing for me just vibrant shortcuts.

Alternatively use the search function found in all finder windows, easy and visual search results are more user friendly.

watteau
thanks for the compliment.
Glad to be of service.

Zaid,
kewl toolbar!!
I had never thought of putting applications on the bar.
I don't think I'll put as many as u do. (I prefer uncluttered. I hate it when people put everything on the desktop)
But a couple would surly come in handy.

Ahh, I refer to tools bar often because since I switched to OSX fully in 2002 I learned to open two finder windows in column view on the screen and make them fill my screen completely so I don't see the desktop, as a matter of fact I don't leave any thing to show on desktop not even the drives.

Secondary apps in the tools bar while main apps sits in the Dock.

Screen capture below is an indicative one and not the real way I work.

Interesting.

I back it up a notch there.
I keep the HDD, an alias to Documents, Company, Downloads.
If it does get messy here, then I've been download bingeing

On the dock, I have the important apps, and applications folder (springy icon).
I use RapidoStart for the frequent apps.
