As for "local customs" Magnus, why should you bother when we have a bar and brothel on every other street?

I just find it weird that someone took time to come onto a Mac site and instead of contributing to technical issues is more interested in the ads that YOU DONT choose but google chooses.

Well I guess you're right in a way; if respecting local customs is not appreciated then why bother? But that seems wrong to me. If I had started this site anywhere else in the world I'd still want the site to respect local customs, whatever they may be. That there are other things going on in society in general that is not exactly in line with that, shouldn't mean that we shouldn't try, I think. What does sometimes seem strange to me is that I, as someone not from here and this culture, is fighting hard for keeping Arabic in Shuffle/Shufflegazine and the site "clean", that it's not someone from here that does that.

Personally I want anyone to feel comfortable coming to the site to ask for help, offer help, or whatever it is. That means more work and probably less revenue (so far EmiratesMac.com is just a black hole of time and expenses ) but since I think it's the right thing to do I wouldn't want to do it any other way.

Well... This is a public site for everybody to participate. People would like to feel comfortable to enter, enjoy the site, help others & make friends.
What would a new guest enter & find those ads feel ? What do you think would be their impression about it ? Personally, I log into emiratesmac couple of times a week to learn about mac, although I am not a frequent user. I started making friends from the site. I understand that the site needs financial support, but does it have to be from those ??
By the way, talking about bars streets is immaterial here.

ruthfully, we all know its adsense and not this site, so I dont see why Magnus should be running around trying to whack them into what they "should" be. As to what I think. I think people have way too much time on their hands if they log onto a Mac site and start threads about how they dont like the ads.

No, it was a contradiction to the whole respecting local customs issue. The people who run the country dont respect the local culture, and yet you are offended by an adsense ad? You're not making sense.

Magnus and Co. do everything in THEIR power to keep EM, Shuffle, the magazine, and even the meetings 100% respectable, friendly to everyone, and family oriented. But somethings arent in the user's power.

if you are here for Mac issues, then waste less time about the ads and more time on mac issues. Any 1/2 way smart person understands that a community site like this one doesnt pick and choose its ads, but hands that over to google. It is google, not EM, that chooses the ads. Maybe you arent 1/2 way smart.

Do you understand that a site needs financial support? Have YOU offered such support? Doubtful.

You making friends, and you logging in once a week, or 100 times a week is however very immaterial. Think before you speak, this whole thread should have never been created.

Thats fine, but when starting a topic you also open up the doors to have other members counter your thoughts. In the end of this process something constructive (should) come out.

Lets be realistic though, what do YOU think should be done? You havent given any alternatives to adsense.

I would strongly prefer not putting Google ads there and I'd much rather have ads from local businesses. They'd be more relevant for the businesses and our users and we'd have control over them. But I'm not exactly sure how to go about making that happen and there's been little interest when we've tried in the past.

As I've mentioned I'd love to be able to offer some pay to moderators (and have more moderators) and others who help out on a regular basis, including with meetings. Some revenue would also mean we could be at certain events and perhaps even arrange events of our own to the benefit of all Apple fans. That sure can't happen without regular and considerable income. Right now Google ads makes on some days a few dollars. I see more local advertising in Google ads, like Du and RAK Bank, and that's great, but we're still far away from being as good an Adsense place as the US.

I went to a few sessions, the therapist told me never to return. But you STILL didnt answer my questions. Bt now who is skirting the issue at hand? You start a topic, then when real conversations happen on said topic you bolt?

The most viable ad scheme right now is Adsense. and sadly, it isnt 100% customizable, and you have to make due with what they choose.

If you have a different view, if you have some different ad schemes that none of us have heard of, or that you think that would be better, please let us know. otherwise I again wonder why this topic was even started if, as you pointed out above, you come on here for mac related things.

Since this is a community site, and you seem appalled by the ads at hand, why dont YOU take the initiative to contact local businesses and see if they'd like to have their ads on the site?
