Now that's the big question - comments/suggestions include Cougar, Liger, ... and Sabertooth.

That ought to be the official codename, according to Macworld anyway. Still plenty of cat names to chose from.

Now my daughter suggested Ninja kitten but...

But, after Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard, it would seem Apple is sticking to the big cats after all.

Of course they will run out of these at some point...

BTW, "lion" is the only big one missing. The king... Best Mac OS X ever?
    Cheers,

I think Apple will continue this trend with OS X, then change for OS XI.
Maybe Lion is the last one, but I think it would be a good name for the server.
Funny that the "king of jungle" lives in the savannas.

I would agree... Or, to quote one alternative point of view:

"There won't be a Mac OS XI. OS X 10.9 Lion will be the last release and after that Apple will stop selling Macs and concentrate only on iTunes, iPods and iPhones and other consumer gadgets."
    Cheers,

    I don't like that notion.
We would lose our Raison D'etre.
We would lose all purpose for existence.
    What would we do?

Well, there'll always be Windows 8, and then Windows 9...

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Mac user in and out, but we have to be realistic -- with Windows more and more like Mac OS X, with most people not knowing or caring which OS they're using, or how to make a choice, with the progress of the cloud and virtualization, etc.

I reckon one way or another good old Mac-vs-Windows war will soon be over...
    Cheers,
    -Michl

Hmm. Isn't the sabretooth tiger a long extinct animal that died out because it couldn't adapt to a changing environment!!

Yes, that definition is spot on. Would make a nice cover picture though.

Like I said before, as far as the metaphor goes, only the Lion will do. But then where do you go from there?

Also, the purist will tell you that the naming scheme is already severely compromised. For instance, Snow Leopard is actually a completely different species from Leopard (so much for the incremental update!) But a Cougar is a kind of Lion. And, of course, Panther and Leopard are actually the same cat...

And OMG Mac OS X 8! More pictures here.
    Cheers,
    -Michl
