It was a nice conversation. Infact I read it twice. I am web developer and not much into in OS. For me Linux and Xserver are really stable server platforms. I really don't remember when I restarted both of the servers. But that is not in the case of Microsoft platform.

Linux is now getting well transformed for desktop level. One such flavor is Ubuntu. And they are well concentrating on user interface and ease of use of the system.

Thanks guys :-)

I agree Ubuntu seems to be doing well.
The version I installed on the XBox was Gentoox (a variant of Gentoo)

Why do you complain about Windoze?
It is the most stable system ever!
I have a PC at home that hasn't crashed in 2 years!
Not once!
Of course, I haven't turned it on for 3 years.

But I don't see it happening on the client side soon.
It still needs a stronger foot hold on the server side, before it can move there (if ever).

After thinking about this.
I have to say I'm disappointend in the Linux community, not the open source community.
It could have been so much more.
Just like the puny VLC player that does everything, unhindered by politics and profit margins.
I think that is what I was expecting for Linux.
It tried to be the OS for everything (server, client, phones) but instead has become the OS for none.

Sorry Dan, but that's my 7.36 Fils on it.

I run Ubuntu on my workstation in the office. It currently owns about 30% of the linux desktop market (and climbing) with Novell's SuSE coming a not so close second. I would say it is probably one of the more polished linux desktops. You can also grab an application called automatix which downloads all the stuff you need, but which isn't open source such as music and video codecs, linux themes, chat add ons like OTR, vmware server, Java. etc. My mum has been running it for almost a year and she thinks it is just a windows upgrade. My mum scans, prints, surfs and web and writes documents. No gaming, nothing fancy. We did the upgrade after she moved to vista and the new Microsoft office and she hated it.

That ok Fang - Linux has a very distributed development network, and the people that create or manage a distribution have very specific goals; This in turn leads to a lot of chaos in the linux world. Some distros do stuff better than others which has been known to frustrate people as well.

I think on the server side Linux does do some stuff very well. IMHO - It is probably the best platform to run your Databases on. Oracle has been touting Linux + Oracle + Intel = Unbreakable for years now. Every major DB vendor supports Linux as a base, with the exception of Microsoft.

I also Like Linux for mail servers. It doesn't really have the same fine grained access control methods that say windows or Novell has for file rights. But as long as you just need basic: deny, read and write then it is cheap file server.

For networks (routers, Firewalls, Proxys) I like BSD.
