At the occasion of the announcement of Mac OS X Leopard's official release date by Apple on Friday, Amazon.com, has started a promotion on both Single-user and Family Pack versions of the company's major operating system upgrade.

The Single-user and Family Pack versions of Leopard are both available for pre-order and are respectively priced $109 and $189, instead of $129 and $199 which represents a 16% and 5% price cut.

Mac OS X Leopard will start shipping on October 26, the two items are eligible for Amazon's "free Super Saver Shipping" :

- Apple Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard
- Apple Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard Family Pack

Leopard features over 300 new features and enhancements, including a new Desktop and Dock, a redesigned Finder, the Time Machine ultra modern backup feature, a new version of iChat, multiple-desktops with Spaces, advanced file preview with QuickLook among many others.

A server version of Leopard which features setup made easier, iCal server, Wiki-based collaborative server and Podcast Producer is also available for pre-order in 10 Client and Unlimited Client editions for $499 and $999, respectively.

Amazon also offers a 5% price cut on iLife '08 and on iWork '08.

The online retailer has historically been offering very attractive prices for major Apple software launches.

Interested buyers should perhaps wait and see what Apple IMC ME may announce. I would hope that we'll hear soon when Leopard will be here and at what price (7% discount for EMUGers!!). I've heard that when Tiger was released it was here in the UAE the same day as in US, but I wasn't here myself back then.

For most users, Time Machine (and an external hard drive) is alone worth it

Hi, just upgraded to Leopard, but when initiating Time Machine, it doesn't recognise my Network Mass Storage Device. Any ideas?

Time machine does not support network drives at the moment. Nevertheless, macosxhints.com has a simple solution, open terminal and type in the following command:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

After that go to the Time Machine preference pane and hopefully you should be able to select your NAS drive from there.

Remember, Apple must have disabled this for a reason, so I am not sure about the performance or the reliability you can expect. Currently I am using TM with a FW800 drive directly connected to my MBP.
