    renaming multiple files

Is there a way without using iPhoto that I can rename multiple files in one go? I selected all the files I wanted to change and selected 'Get Info' but it only seemed like I could change them one at a time?

Perhaps A Better Finder Rename? I've not tried it myself. There's always the Terminal of course.

You can do it using Automator.
You will have to build a new workflow.
first drag in the files you want to rename.
    Then add the rename option.
It will ask you if you want to rename the original or make a copy before making the changes (its better to copy)

You have the option of adding date, replacing text, giving all the same name with a number, etc.

Keep in mind, if you change files that are part of iPhoto this way, you will mess up iPhoto.

iPhoto would change photos names only. Adobe Bridge is another solution but it comes with Photoshop or a full Adobe CS package. Bridge has the facility to rename any file format in a batch.

When I mean rename files, I want to rename them with the same name, but for a number to go on the end of the file name. ie

    xyz 001
    xyz 002
    xyz 003

    etc.

It doesn't seem like it is possible, MacRumors

    I've attached an Automator file.
    Open the file.
Put in the name you choose for the files.
Select the files you want to rename in FInder.
    Run Automator.

    Hope it works for you.
