    Dream Setup...

    Hi All

As a potential swticher and Mac newbie, I was hoping for some guidance and the flaws to my dream setup!

Mac Pro in the second bedroom storing all my music and films whilst still allowing me to access the Windows based files (mainly MS Office) that I'll transfer from my old PC. Due to work commitments I may still need this function going forward.

Wireless internet connection and backup through Time Capsule linking the Mac Pro to AppleTV in the lounge allowing me to download new material whilst also accessing stored items from the Mac Pro, so I can watch on the big screen with surround sound.

Be gentle with the flaming, but any advice, thoughts, comments and suggestions would be more than welcome as at the moment this dream is outweighing the fear of "The Switch"!!

    Cheers

    Paul

Hopefully nobody will flame you here.
The guys are pretty timid, unless a new guy takes it into another direction.
    But they WILL be critical.

First of all, tell us what you plan to buy and what you already have.
That way we can tell whether or not there is a better purchase.

Generally your setup is basic and straight forward.
But consider putting the Office files on the Time Capsule instead of the Mac Pro.
    Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.

First - get rid of wireless. Seriously! Understand that actual transfer speed in wireless environment is SHARED (mean divided on number of active network devices. So even in situation of TimeCapsule <-> Mac u speed is twice less than theoretical ). So invest into good OLD Cat5e cables and GIGABYTE switch from Netgear/Cisco/D-Link. Leave wireless connections for phone and guest connections. Its not only for speed but beneficial for security as well. You know wireless network is pretty much radio and can be traced/intercepted/cracked.... Many people using short simple passwords... i bet you are not exception.... Let me guess your password ? Wife's name? Pet? yours?..... u know what i mean )))

You should not worry about switch to mac - take care about your files and everything should be fine. Always good habit to make backups BEFORE any upgrades.... In case of failure it will save you hours of recovery...

Anyway welcome aboard and you need to start "think different", its crazy and sometimes illogical...but fun and looking good ))
/* all these things we'll one day swallow whole and fade out again and fade out again....
