Now THIS is an iPhone killer

I didnt go for the Iphone, too old, too pointless, old technology, no MMS, 2 MP camera? give me a break.

Didnt go for an HTC, too old people-ish, Its something a computer geek who is 42 would have.

I refuse to use a Nokia, too iffy. and problematic.

I'm a Sony Ericsson guy, and I have been for 5 years now. Every W series Ive owned has been amazing, and the S500 I had, I still have.

My current phone is the W902. AMAZING phone.

But this! This I am getting the second it's out, Im not even asking a single question. This is basically a phone tailor made for me! 12.1 MP camera, Sony walkman media player, Wifi, GPS, email, web browser.... EVERYTHING. Oh, and MMS.

    iDon't

I admit its a VERY nice phone.
And I would only consider a Sony Ericsson or HTC phone, should I quit the iPhone.
But far from an iPhone killer.

You need to keep in mind a few things.
    1) the iPhone is more than the sum of its parts, its iTunes, iTunes store, its the powerful architecture, and the amazing OS.
I'll admit the iPhone has many short comings, and I don't know why Apple has made those mistakes.
(I mean would it kill them if they throw in MMS!!)
I don't like MMS, and I have received 2 MMS files and sent none.
But I understand that people want it, and its an insult that a phone that is 10% the cost of the iPhone can do it, while it can't.

    2) a 12.1 MP camera?!!
    What the....?
I think anything beyond 3MP (maybe 5MP) is useless.
With our current technology the pictures aren't getting better, just bigger.
The weak point here is the lens, and until that changes the pictures won't improve.
And the bigger MP is just an easy way to market the phone/camera.
It's easier for people to understand that 12 is better than 2.

The simple fact that every phone that comes out is positioned to be the "iPhone killer" shows how strong the iPhone is.
The number of "iPhone killers" is a bow to the master.
But the fact that the iPhone is still king of the hill despite all those "killers' and despite its MANY shortcomings...
Well I feel something swell in my heart...
    Something so...
    Its just so much...
    Its yesterday's burritos...

Its much more than an iPhone killer! this is the future!

    1. So is this. Dont forget, this comes with cybershot technology, a walkman player, one of the best available, Sony's music store (not that this or iTunes work here) And the Symbian OS is pretty decent. Especially the version on this.

Also, one might argue the Apps... too much selection makes a device pointless. and I hink the iPhone is nearing that mark..

    2. It really depends on your needs. I DO send MMS. I sent 5 or 6 today. I also sent ungodly amounts of SMS and voice messages.

    3. My current sony ericsson has a 5 mp camer... and it isnt sharp enough for me! the iphone is beyond bad in this category. I agree that they arent really getting better, but larger. But take a 5MP pic and down size it on you Mac to 480*600 and the quality is amazing.

I personally take videos EVERY day, and around 20 or so pictures a day. Its a part of my lifestyle. A 12.1 MP camera is something I would want.

No, This isnt coming ut as an iPhone killer. I see it that way. When I see a phone that offers EVERYTHING I want, when the iPhone offers MAYBE 20% of what I want. the iPhone was just killed.

Mind you, we are mac people. and now we're acting that a phone with sales numbers behind it makes it good? if thats the case we should also apply that to PCs and switch back to god aweful windows.

The fact of the matter is the original iPhone was in many ways like Jimi Hendrix. the 1st to do so many things, taught us alot, and was amazing THEN. but today, Hendrix isnt anything special. I can name 100 better guitarists TODAY. and there are so many better phones than the iPhone.

Yes, we owe the iPhone alot, but sadly, all those competitors learned fast.

Fangpyre... where you get the burrito from? I'd kill for one. We had taco bell a while back in Dubai Mall and it brought back memories (of PS2, Arizona, and people doing, smoking, drinking things they probably shouldn't have been. lol) but in the end of the day it was the mc donalds of the burrito world.

I was talking about the technical hill.
Just like the Mac sits squarely on top.

I don't see that most have learned from the iPhone.
Just like most haven't learned from the Mac.
It looks like SE has learned with this one, and used it to improve their phone.
But I think Nokia and Blackberry haven't, and are even worse than when they started.

    But like I said.
I know that the iPhone is not perfect.
And I just can't understand why Apple doesn't plug them and get it over with.

As for Taco Bell, I only go there for tacos.
I think the best Mexican food I tasted here is El Chico on the JBR Walk.

As far as I know, Walkman phones don't run on symbian (except for W950 & W960 which was on Symbian UIQ3)
SE has their own OS that operates on W series.

The W902 runs what they call the SE OS, a variant of Symbian series 60.

    Fangpyre... JBR Walk?

In my opinion, when you try to copy something, you generally fail, because those who did it in the first place, know what they are doing much better than you. Apple is a great example of that. From engineering to marketing they are as good as it gets with certain things. iPhone is one of them. How many "iPhone killers" have we seen so far come out and fail? Lots. None have succeeded. They are all great gadgets, but when you market something as an "iPhone killer" you better deliver or you will be laughed at.

SE makes great phones. I mean come on, they are the ones who created portable music players in the first place. Walkman is a household name. Unfortunately for them they have lost that position and recognition when it comes to personal media players long time ago. One word. iPod. iPod now is a household name, not walkman. But if you take camera stuff, then Sony is miles ahead of Apple and its phone when it comes to digital imaging. And its awesome.

I like this SE phone because of its style and the camera. It is a great phone. Awesome phone. But it will never kill anything, let alone iPhone.

iPhone is not perfect. But it is what it is. People who have iPhones don't refer to them as "Nokia killers" or "Blackberry killers" or anything else killers. They just love and enjoy them. I don't understand why companies and people take cheapshots at iPhone everytime they can... Inferiority complex?

Ultra, I was not aiming this at you. I know your stance on iPhone why you like and why you don't. I just wrote this because I was researching this new SE phone you showed us and I swear to God, I read this damn "iPhone killer" term too many times and everyone comparing it to iPhone, instead of diffirentiating it from it using its upsides. Hehe.

    Jumeria Beach Residence.
The Walk is the road between JBR and the beach.

    Mushroom,
    You are so right.

    Ultra,
I can understand why you won't go for an iPhone.
Most of its short comings can be resolved with 3rd party apps.
Which, I know, is not an excuse for the phone or for Apple.
Its a compromise to get the best of both worlds.

I agree with you that the pictures of a 5MP phone are great, especially those on Sony Ericsson.
But the question is hoe much better are (if they are) than a 3MP.
And how much would a 12MP be?
If I shrink them, then I took away the only benefit they offer.

I don't think this will be the phone that kills the iPhone.
I think it will just be another phone on a roadmap of phones.

    On another note.
You compare the Mac to the iPhone in terms of position.
    When they are totally different.
But I will leave that for a column idea I thought for Shufflegazine.
