Talking eeepc for 999 AED and Acer's new ultra portable!

So I was at DG Sharaf this weekend and guess what I see, the Asus Eeepc for 999 dirhams! This is of course, the old 7 inch, I dont believe anyone has the 10 inch ones being sold in the US.

No wait, there's more, they also had an Acer, Its called the Acer Aspire One. 8.9 inch wide screen, wifi, 3 usb ports, and an Intel Atom chip at 1.6 Ghz.

It comes in 2 configurations, one is with a linux OS (Not sure which one) 1/2 a gig of RAM, and an 8 GB SSD. 1500 AED.

The second has 1 whole gb of RAM, a 120 gb HD, and windoze XP. This one costs 1899 AED!

Also comes in many colors, white, black, navy blue, pink... and a few others.

YouTube - Acer Aspire One hands on

Dude! I so want one! Guess I could sell my 12 inch iBook and get this!

Oh, also saw the new HP all in one PC (like the iMac) but its a full 19 inch THOUCH SCREEN! 7000 AED.

Im lucky Sarah was with me, or I'd be about 10k in debt right now!

I was tempted by the Acer Aspire One too, but I read some reviews of it and seems people generally don't like that the mouse buttons are split up on either side of the mouse pad and many say the keyboard, although larger than the eeePC's, is actually worse. I still want Apple to bring out something a bit smaller than the MBA but I don't really think that will happen. I am curios as to whether they will bring out a new MBA model soon and what it will be like. Probably just a speed, storage, and RAM bump.

I havent seen the reviews of the issues with the acer except for the buttons being on opposite ends, that is for sure a draw back, but Im assuming oe would get used to it.

I wish the Eeepc 901 or 1000 were here so we could make a true comparison. And you're right, if Apple made a comparable Mac i'd buy it without even thinking.

Also heard of a Dell netbook. Wonder when that will show up.

I saw the Acer an hour ago at Eon.
They also had the HP touchscreen.
At that price its very tempting.

just saw the msi wind here in saudi over the weekend and based on reviews online, it seems to be a better bang for the buck than the eee pc. looks rather nice too--the eee pc kinda reminds me of the vtech toy.

Vey true. I often thought the Eeepc wasnt made that well and would die after 3 months. The Acer looks to be very well built, and with a 120 gb option, its that much more tempting with a price of about 400 bucks.

It has XP.
Anything above 1 GB is pretty much a waste anyway.
512 is plenty enough for anything this thing can do.

Well I went and got an Aspire One, but unfortunately I think I got a lemon so I have to take it back. It just says it can't find a boot volume. Perhaps this is my punishment for buying the Windows model I picked it for the larger drive (120Gb) and RAM (1GB).

It's a good looking little computer. They keyboard and mouse are pretty okay and it feels pretty solid all round. I'll get back to you about performance but after playing with it in the store it shouldn't be a problem.
