how are the macs goining to access the storage? ethernet? if so then they can buy any storage that is windows compatible and install this ExtremeZ-IP from grouplogic (ExtremeZ-IP | Products | Group Logic) where in they can isntall an AFP server on a Windows 2003 Server or any Windows OS in order to reshare the storage to the mac clients. The switches would be and must be in GigE. Else they can buy the promise storage in apple and direct attached it to an xserve or macpro then reshare it through AFP for macs and SMB for windows.

Just a pointer, the agency i work also deals with design and artwork files which are kept on a central network drive to share among all. Majority are macs, but if a client service person wants to see how the artwork looked then he can open it on his pc without any problems.

We use Xserve with a 1TB capacity and apart from permission issues while initial install (now fixed) we haven't come up to any problems. Both PC's and Mac's can use it with the file name and permissions intact. Check with CDA if you need further info, they set it up for us. Hope this helps.

looking at the pricing of the ExtremeZ-IP it doesnt look a cheap product at all ! depending on number of clients to access it.

I didn't think of looking there.
It looks like they will end up paying $4,000 - $5,500 in software alone for this to work!!

If I were them, I'd go for an Xserve.
Let's see.
