Unhappy IPod classic showing red X symbol on reset

While listening to my iPod, it fell down on the hard floor and then was unresponsive. Therefore, I tried resetting it by pressing the Menu and Select button simultaneously. Then, it showed the Apple Logo followed by a Red X symbol...tht's it...I tried redoing the same steps again, and the same result - Red X.

Tried taking it into Disk Mode as explained in apple support, but was not able to do it. It ultimately ends up showing the Red X symbol.

Can anyone help me with this issue? Is there a workaround/solution for this problem? Please help! I can't afford losing the songs as I have not backed them up

Btw, I bought this IPod classic 80GB in Dec 2008. So would the warranty be valid until now?

Unless you bought AppleCare extended warranty, your iPod should have got the usual (for Apple) 1-year warranty -- which means you're out of luck.

As always Google is your friend, will show that many others have had the same problem before. And that is looks real bad. However some innovative solutions might work... one never knows.
    Cheers,
