Exclamation How to install a custom Carrier Settings file

    Definitions
A custom carrier settings file, or .ipcc file, is a tiny update file that is sent from your cellular carrier to your iPhone, either by MMS, or through iTunes, which can enable additional functionality by installing network specific settings, such as Data, MMS, and Visual Voicemail APN's, carrier logos and voicemail numbers.
.mobileconfig files are often used by businesses who need to control and configure iPhone access on their networks. Some websites have created online versions of .mobileconfig file generators, which have been used to enable some disabled features on iPhones. .mobileconfig files are different from .ipcc files, and do not allow as much configuration.

    Background
After upgrading to OS 3.0, a lot of people wrote on the EmiratesMac forums complaining about the following problems:

    • Problems with MMS & data APN settings
    • No internet tethering
    • No "Cellular Data Network" menu in Settings>General>Network
    • Not being able to disable data use over the the cellular data network.

These problems were caused because features such as tethering, MMS, and the "Cellular Data Network" menu are disabled by default in the iPhone OS 3. The reason for this is Apple is trying to give more control to carriers over the features they their users can access. This is probably because many carriers are worried about the amount of data iPhone owners use compared to owners of other phones! (Also, many carriers like to charge for MMS and tethering activation.)

etisalat are an official iPhone carrier, but at the time of writing, they still have not released an updated carrier settings file to enable these new OS 3 features. Until they do, there are two ways you can unlock MMS and the Cellular Data Network menu without an update from etisalat or du.

The first method is to download or create a .mobileconfig file, at sites like BenM and Unlockit using Safari on your iphone and entering the APN and MMS settings for your carrier. However, some problems can occur as these sites are using invalid type masks, which can cause Internet Tethering to fail, or can link the MMS and Data APN, which can cause problems on carriers like etisalat, which use different APN's for Cellular Data and MMS.

Because of the limitations of the .mobileconfig method, we have created custom carrier config files for both etisalat and du.

Using these files does the following:
    • Adds an etisalat or du carrier logo
    • Enables "Cellular Data Network Menu in Settings>General>Network and fills in the data, MMS, and roaming voicemail settings for etisalat and du.
    • In OS 3.0 they enable the 'Internet Tethering' toggle in Settings>Network. (In OS 3.1 Apple now requires .ipcc files to be signed by apple before tethering will work. The Dev-Team are working on a jailbreak to remove this requirement.)
    • Enables the following UAE emergency dialing codes: 999 (police) 998 (fire) & 997 (ambulance)
    • Enables Network Identity and Time Zone (automatically updates the system clock on some carriers)
    • Adds a services menu with useful numbers for various du and etisalat services in Settings>Phone>(Carrier Name)

You can download the latest version of the custom etisalat .ipcc file directly below.
You can download the latest version of the custom du .ipcc file directly below.

If you ever want to revert your settings, you can download the original, unmodified version of the old etisalat .ipcc directly from Apple's update server (right-click and save to download), or from directly below. (Note that this version will disable MMS, tethering and the Cellular Data Network menu, as well as the etisalat carrier logo.)

To install a custom .ipcc file:
    1. Download the latest custom .ipcc file to your computer.
    2. Enable carrier testing mode in iTunes.
    3. If you are using a mac, then hold down Option-click "Check for Updates" in the iPhone Summary tab in iTunes. If you are using Windows, Shift-click "Check for Updates". Locate the .ipcc file and select it. Your iPhone will now update. This takes just a couple of seconds.
    4. Immediately select Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings.
    5. Your iPhone will reboot. You should now see a custom carrier logo in the top left hand corner and be able to access the Cellular Data Network menu in Settings>General>Network.

If you would like to find out how to edit your own custom carrier settings file, please join our discussion here to find out how.

(NOTE: If you have already updated to v.1.6, the two files below are the same. v1.6 = v5.1! I'm just renaming the version number to match the bundle version inside the file. It's become important with the release of OS 3.1 because the 3.1 will no longer allow you to install a lower bundle version over a higher one.)

It seems the file wasn't uploaded to your phone.
Also, remember you need to install 5.1, not the original file.

You can get a normal data plan from Etisalat.
Keep in mind, the iPhone plans (that have yet to be released) may only be available to Etisalat purchased phones.
