Smile How to enable MMS on an iPhone 2G!

I haven't been able to try this myself, as I have a 3G, but here is a procedure that seems to be working:

    1. Upgrade your original iPhone to OS 3.0. Unlock and Jailbreak your iPhone.

    2. Enable your "Cellular Data Settings" menu.
    2. Open Cydia on the iPhone. Install the Cydia package “ActivateMMS2G”. Restart your phone.
    3. Open Messages and try to send an MMS. If it fails, check your MMS settings are correct.

As always, do this at your own risk. Remember to backup your iPhone and find out how to restore before you start.

Let me know if this works for you - I can't test it myself!

    UPDATE

It seems some people are having problems using the above hack when their Data APN and MMS APN are different, as is the case on UAE networks.

The problem causes the MMS settings to keep disappearing.

Here is a procedure to try and fix this:

    1. Install the Cydia package "ActivateMMS2G" and reboot
    2. Visit help.BenM.at on your iPhone
    3. Create a custom .mobileconfig file
    4. Enter your MMS APN, username and passwork for both of the APN fields (Mobile Internet and Visual Voicemail).
    5. Press generate, install it, press OK, then reboot RIGHT AWAY. Do not check the settings!!!
    6. Go to settings > General and scroll down to the new profile. If it says 2 (or more) profiles, delete/uninstall the one(s) that are not called "help.benm.at" (i.e. delete all but the one you just installed). If it only says help.benm.at, skip to step 8.
    7. After deleting the other profiles, go back to help.BenM.at and repeat steps 3-5. The first time you try to install it, it may fail or hang while installing. If this happens, press the home button, then try again, it should work.
    8. Once your iPhone has rebooted, go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network. Your MMS APN should be present in every APN field.
    9. Fill in your MMSC and MMS Proxy. Once again, my network has no username or password, so I am not sure if you should add this here or during step 4... Experiment!!
    10. Reboot your iPhone.
    11. Open Messages and try to send an MMS. If it fails, check your settings are correct.
    12. If it is successful, go back to Cellular Data Network and change your Cellular Data APN to the one appropriate for your network.
    13. Test your data connection.
    14. Re-Test your MMS.

    Hi Gierran
    Thanks for the info.

I have tried both suggestions (installing the etisalat v1.5 ipcc file, and generating a custom .mobileconfig file from help.BenM.at.)
After both, the "Cellular Data Network" tab IS there, but when I tap it and see the Cellular Data/Visual Voicemail/MMS settings, almost everything is filled in as it should. EXCEPT for the MMS.

    I have the following:
    MMS
    APN: <blank>
    Username: <blank>
    Password: <blank>
    MMSC: mms/servlets/mms
    MMS Proxy: 10.12.0.30:8080
    MMS Max Message Size: <blank>
    MMS UA Prof URL: <blank>

When I try to manually insert the etisalat MMS settings into the "APN/Username/Password" fields, then tap on "Network" to go back to the previous page and tap again on "Cellular Data Network" to re-check the settings, the MMS "APN" field is once again, or still, "<blank>".

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks,
    Chris

(apologies if this post is repeated, I posted a "quick reply" earlier this morning, but it seems to have disappeared. .com)

I have a small problem that I'm hoping you can help with:
I tried both methods you described(manually selecting the etisalat v1.5 ipcc, and creating a custom .mobileconfig file at help.BenM.at). in both cases, when selecting the "Cellular Data Network", most of the info is already filled in, EXCEPT the MMS APN/Username/Password, which is blank. When I edit the values and fill them in, then tap on "Network" to go bak to the previous page, then tap again on the "Cellular Data Network", the previously edited values are now missing and once again, blank.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks for sharing.

Firstly, you must recognise that MMS is not supported on an iPhone 2G. Some people have had success hacking it to enable it, but you may have some trouble.

To minimise trouble, try following the procedure exactly, and use a fresh OS 3.0 restore. I always do a clean install and then reimport all my contacts etc. manually when troubleshooting.

Unfortunately I don't own a 2G, so I can't really help much. If you want to come along to the EMUG meeting on the 17th, I would be glad to have a play with it.

In the meantime you could check out the Hackint0sh forums for other people's experiences, but the procedure I posted below is reported to have worked for some people who have a different MMS API to their data API, like Etisalat does.

If you edit my your network settings, you could try delete the Data APN, and input the MMS settings. This will of course disable edge though, but may be a temporary fix until you can get to the bottom of this, and you can also try it to confirm that MMS works in theory!

When you created your mibileconfig file at help.benm.at, did you follow the following step exactly?: 4. Enter your MMS APN, username and passwork for both of the APN fields (Mobile Internet and Visual Voicemail).

Your process also differs from the writer's:
    9. Fill in your MMSC and MMS Proxy. Once again, my network has no username or password, so I am not sure if you should add this here or during step 4... Experiment!!

You already have the MMSC and MMS Proxy settings, username and password present in the .ipcc. If you want to edit my .ipcc file to change the APN settings you can use Edit Plist Pro, the procedure is covered here.

Otherwise, I can only suggest you do a restore, followed by the procedure, but skip installing the custom .ipcc file, at least until you get MMS working.

    Thanks gierran

I will try your suggestions tonight or tomorrow and feedback.

I'm away till the afternoon of the 17th- if there's no major delay's, I'll certainly try make the EMUG meeting.

    Many thanks, once again-
