iPhone FAQ - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING
If you have any general questions about OS 3.0 please check Apple's iPhone User Guide For iPhone OS 3.0 before proceeding.
A lot or people have experienced particular problems after upgrading to OS 3.0:
• Problems with MMS & data settings
• No internet tethering
• No "Cellular Data Network" menu in Settings>General>Network
These settings need an update from your mobile carrier to enable them.
These problems are caused because internet tethering, and the "Cellular Data Network" menu are disabled by default in the OS 3.0 update from Apple. Apple is trying to give more control to carriers over the features they their users can access. This is probably because many telcos are worried about the amount of data iPhone owners use compared to owners of other phones!
Carrier updates are delivered to your iPhone in two possible ways - by MMS, or from Apple's carrier update server when you plug your iPhone into iTunes. (You can download the original etisalat .ippc file from apple here, or from the below attachment. It was last updated by etisalat 08.12.08!)
There are several ways you can unlock tethering and the Cellular Data Network menu without an update from etisalat or du. The quickest is to visit sites like help.BenM.at and Unlockit using Safari on your iphone and entering the Access Point Name and MMS settings for your carrier. (Some problems can occur as these sites are using invalid type masks, which cause Internet Tethering to fail.)
Alternatively, I have created carrier settings files for the carriers Du and Etisalat.
Using these files does the following:
• Adds a nice etisalat or du carrier logo
• Enables "Cellular Data Network Menu in Settings>General>Network and fills in the data, MMS, and roaming voicemail settings for etisalat and du.
• Enables Internet Tethering toggle in Settings>Network
• Fixes the bug that sends an SMS to multiple recipients as an MMS, making it more expensive.
• Enables emergency dialling: 999 (police) 998 (fire) & 997 (ambulance)
• Enables Network Identity and Time Zone (automatically updates the system clock on some carriers)
• Adds a services menu for various carrier services in Settings>Phone>(Carrier Name)
[B]You can download the latest version of the etisalat .ipcc or the du .ipcc file from the below attachment.
If you have any problems after upgrading to OS 3.0, please try the following before posting:
1. Sync your contacts, pictures, notes and calendars to your computer.
2. Restore your iPhone in iTunes. When it is finished restoring you will have a virgin install of OS 3.0. Do not select "Restore from Backup". Instead set up a new phone, and then set up your sync options. You can now sync the phone, or sync it later if you prefer.
3. In order to install the .ipcc file, you will need to enable carrier testing mode in iTunes.
4. If you are using a mac, then hold down option and select "Check for Updates" in the iPhone Summary tab in iTunes. If you are using Windows hold sown Shift when you select "Check for Updates." Locate the downloaded .ipcc file and select it. The phone will now update. This process takes just a couple of seconds.
5. Immediately select Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
6. Your iPhone will reboot. You can now sync your phone with iTunes. If your iphone needs to be unlocked, then you will have to install Ultrasnow before you can connect to your carrier.
If anyone has any trouble with any of these files, or has any suggestions, please let me know. I don't have a du SIM, but I have had positive reports on the du .ipcc.

My iPhone is carrier locked. Can I upgrade to OS 3.0?
Yes you can.
I'm having some strange problems with my iPhone since I Jailbroke it!
Jailbreaking can sometimes do some strange things. Try do a restore and follow the procedure above.
Can I make/edit my own carrier settings file?
Yes. You can join our discussions here to find out how. If you have any improvements please upload them here to share with others. Currently I'm looking to see if it's possible to package them as a .mobileconfig file, but so far I'm not able to include a carrier logo and a lot of the tweaks I've made. Erodov Is a good place to start learning about carrier settings. The Hackint0sh forums are also most informative.
Help! "Cellular Data Network" Disappeared after I upgraded to OS 3.0!
Yes. It's disabled by default. It needs to be enabled by a carrier update, or you can make your own by following the instructions above.
Help! My balance keeps going down after I upgraded to OS 3.0!
Try disabling Push and Fetch in Settings>Mail, Contact, Calendars.
However, some people like to keep Push enabled, and to disable the 3G connection, so whenever their iPhone is one a wireless network, they automatically receive emails. To do this you need to enable the Cellular Data Network menu, using one of the methods mentioned above, and delete the Cellular Data APN in Settings>General>Network Settings>Cellular Data Network. Personally I like to keep push and fetch off, and just get mail when I want - saves on battery.
What is tethering?
Apple explain it on their iPhone features page.
I have a first generation iPhone 2g. Does MMS, Tethering, Push and P2P sharing to work?
Apple does not officially support MMS, Tethering, Push and P2P sharing iPhone on the first generation iPhone 2g.
But the smart boys in Hackint0sh have already released a jailbreak patch to enable MMS on an iPhone 2g. and are working on a Jailbreak patch to enable tethering.
If you REALLY have to enable tethering, you could try installing iModem

Hi,
I have searched the forum for a solution to my problem but can't seem to find it.
I have a 2g iPhone running on OS 3.0.
I want to be able to tun off the EDGE as i do not want th iPhone to automatically switch to EDGE when i accidentally get out of a wifi area. I have lost quiet a bit of my money when i move to non-wifi areas in my house.
I have done this:
If i am right, i think OS2.1 had a switch to enable n disable EDGE.
Is there any way i can disable it in OS3.0??
Thanks a bunch.
chip.

Thanks for the immediate reply gierran.
I did see that. But if it is disabled by default, doesn't that mean EDGE shouldn't be working for me if i am outside a wifi area?
Thanks.

Thanks for your help.
By the way I found a fix to my problem. Google search rules!!
Since I got a jailbroken + unlocked device, I downloaded SBsettings from Cydia and voilą!!
I now have a EDGE on/off switch!
I was wondering why I didn't think of that before!!
Thanks anyways.

Hi Gierran
Is there a recommended iphone app that monitors the cellular data package (send and received) on Etisalat other than that one settings-general - usage ???
I'm already on a data package plan and need to know my balance per month.
Thanks in advance.
