There is an application that I downloaded called GPSLite (Motion X) for free. It allows me to manually cache maps at any distance and save them on the phone's memory. There is a cache limit even that I can set (between 10-250 megs) along with a clear cache button.

So, while I was at home with wifi connected, I roamed around Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the roads in between at a couple different distances (took me about 15 minutes or so). Then the next day while driving from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, it used the GPS along with the cached maps, and it worked perfectly. This is exactly what I was looking for. No jailbreaking, no hacking, no dataplan, and FREE application.
Sounds great - I'll definitely check that app out.

Mhh i just pruchased the xMotion GPS full and im kinda disappointed here. Although it uses a google map to display it barely connects to the satellite. You have to really be out in the fields away from buildings and in the open so it can connect. Unlike google maps application which triangulates your location through cell towers this Application completely depends on the GPS chipset to locate your position. So in other words if you can't find a proper GPS signal then its worthless.

    I agree with you partially.

The lite version of the program (from what I hear, does 95% that the full version does). Although with satellite only, it doesn't connect in these heavy concrete filled buildings. So when caching, just connect to the web and don't worry about the satellites. But when on the road.. unless you are riding in a concrete-mobile, you shouldn't have a problem getting a satellite signal to work with your cached maps.

    Hope this helps.

Mhh sorry but i dont understand which part you agree with partially? Basically if theres no GPS signal then your probably better of using the preinstalled google maps which works faster and easier to access without all the annoying sound effects and lags. Anyways another great alternative is Google earth from Appstore. Its just like the PC and also uses GPS signal to locate. But yea it doesnt cache.

If you don't like the application, then delete it. My point was, I was able to cache maps offline and use it (for FREE) without relying on a data plan from crappy-salat.

Guys...I found a way on some arabic foroum to have Sygic Voice control GPS for the UAE...

You should have a jailbroken phone to install it.....

To install the Sygic UAE maps, follow the following procedure:

    1. Make sure the iPhone is Jail Broken and Cydia is installed

    2. From Cydia, go to Manage

    3. Go to Sources

    4. Then add the following source

    5. After that go to search and search for AppSync for OS 3.0

    6. Install AppSync for OS 3.0 and restart the iPhone.

    7. Download Sygic UAE from this link
    zSHARE - Sygic.UAES.rar

    8. Double extract the file and you will have Sygic UAE.ipa

    9. Double click it. It will open in iTunes.

    10. Sync your iPhone normally, after sync it will show on your list of programs…

Please note that this is only for UAE....if you want it for another country, you should remove the first one and install the second one...you can't have multiple countries on 1 iphone.

    Hi Abdooz,
Have you tested this application and if so is it accurate?

Also i would like to mention for future reference that this application is only available "legally" through iTunes. Which means a download copy of this .ipa file on Emiratesmac is not allowed and actions may be taken against your account.

    Hi Omar,
I take back what i said about this application. I tested it again on most of the roads and so far it managed to work like a charm. It did cache the maps but in the settings it keeps telling me that 0.0mb cached maps even when it is cached.

It's not illegal to mention it on the web site but it's something we don't want on this site, that's correct.
