I have the same model, and the upgrade worked flawlessly for me.
Dear all,
I just bought an iPhone 3G (Italian, MB496T) from Plug-ins with the 2.1 firmware.
Did anybody already upgrade his/her phone successfully to 2.2 firmware?
Regards,
Jasper

upthekhyber,
No, I didn't try it yet. I was about to do it, when I read other posts by gerald and sam1919 in this thread. So I don't know if upgrading works without having to unlock to phone.
Does anybody know?
As mentioned in PM to jabber, I have two iPhone 3G's. The Italian one has always worked flawlessly, and upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 without any problems.
It was my US one that had been hardware unlocked that got bricked when upgrading to 2.2, but is now working fine again having used the software unlock.
I updated my iPhone to version 2.2 without any problems!
Thanks for your help.
Jasper
I just upgraded my model MB496T (Italian) to firmware 2.2 and it worked flawlessly as stated by other members of the forum!
Isn't this thread heading misleading? Italian iphone are not locked to the carrier so no need of unlocking.
If anyone notice this: About activating iPhone 3G with a wireless carrier that there in no tick mark at "Locked to carrier" hence there is no tick mart on "Carrier offers authorized unlocking".
Other day, I updated an (MB489X) either a Australian or iphone from New Zealand, the iphone was 2.01 and was recognizing etisalat sim. I went ahead and updated know either this two countries offers official unlocking service.
By the way, Its now possible to 'unlock' 3G iphone, 'locked to carrier'. Courtesy the iphone Dev team!
