yes definately for all 3g application you will need a service provider. If not you cannot use these functions
hii , plz i need some help , i wish to know if an unlocked iphone 3g with an etisalat sim card would the gps work on it or no, and if it worked would it work with no need for an operator for example eitesalt , or we need an operator , and regarding the bluetooth , would it work if we used an external bluetooth and pluged it in it.
whats better to get an unlocked iphone , or buy an iphone and unlocke it in uae

GPS requires an active Internet connection to work.
This can be done by WIFI or Etisalat 3G.
If you can get an unlocked phone it would be better.

But you need the internet only on AGPS settings rite ? is there an option to enable / disable the AGPS on 2.0. I checked reviews of the GPS on iphone but cant find anyone to compare it with an n95. Currently i use agps on my n95 and i get charged nothing because no data transfer is done as i have all the maps downloaded. but i think if you switch to satellite mode you you will be charged for data transfer.
To add, the reviews of iphone GPS arent that convincing, how does one update maps ? lol in dubai you NEED that feature.

A major draw back on the iPhone is that the maps are online.
So u need an active Internet connection.
As a GPS device its very weak.
Something that might be changed once/if TomTom releases their software.

are you sure about that fangpyre ? Thats a BIG draw back when considered with the n95. What about the blackberry ? Does it have maps installed or does it take it off the internet ?
I am planning to get the 3G when merrick gets them, but then i dont want to pay extra for the GPS. I go out every weekend and my trusted n95 does a decent job so far. So if maps is data consuming then thats a thought to consider.
I called up du today and asked for their blackberry plan, its 130 national and 260 roaming unlimited which is cheaper than etisalat. So is is suitable to wait for the blackberry bold or the thunder ?

Considering the iPhone is supposed to come with a data plan, you can't blame them.
But even then, it will have the same Google Maps software as the iPhone 2G.
The problem with that is that it does step by step (instead of following you, this may be changed in some update), and that doesn't work in Dubai.
It can detect where you are (even the old one) but it can't tell you how to go where you are going.
The BB can do both online and offline. Depending on the software you are using.
Considering you have unlimited data on the BB, they are both good options.

I am going tru all the videos on youtube with blackberry bold reviews and comparison reviews with the iphone, damn i am in love with the GUI. I like the clean simple interface and i hope people would go for the blackberry now at least. Like me i think many were pulled back with the confusing interface and cartoon like icons, this has finally changed.
What you told might be a let down to serious mobile users in the UAE. getting an iphone worth 7000 / 8000 will not give you proper GPS or a 24/7 push mail service if you wanted for multiple private accounts. Pay a little 100 extra and u are set with the blackberry unlimited plan.
But the geek within, keeps pulling me towards the iphone![]()
