Will unlocked iPhone from Australia work in UAE ?

Apparently Optus, a telco that operates in AUstralia, sells an unlocked version of the iPhone 3G on one of their plans.

Does this mean that if I buy one (I am going to Australia shortly and then returning to Dubai) that it is likely that I can buy an Etisalat SIM and everything will work? Or could 'unlocked' have different meanings?

    Many thanks.

    Steven

I'd say that's probably a question you need to ask Optus, but my personal assumption would be that yes you could put in any SIM.

Wow. Just looked this up, and a pre-paid 16GB iPhone costs $849 (Australian dollars) from Optus.

If they are unlocked, that would be a great price. My brother lives in Melbourne, so would be able to pick it up and ship it for me

    Quick follow-up.

Just been trawling around the Optus website, and it would seem from the following link -

    FAQs: iPhone 3G

that you can buy the iPhone 3G on pre-pay for $849 and then simply pay $80 to get it unlocked.

Sounds almost too good to be true. I'm doing what I can to find out if this really is the case, and will report back!

unlocking the phone is headache, new update, wait few days and jailbreak again, do step 1 to 12, i spent around AED 3000 on the phone to be safe and legal, with etisalat data package and mobile me, i can get rid of my blackberry for sometimes.

i think the phone in Australia will work in Dubai so go for it

    Update -

Bad news and very bad news I'm afraid.

The bad news is that my brother was in an Optus shop this morning again. They didn't have any phones in stock, but said that they had been getting a few in every now and then.

The very bad news is that apparently Optus are no longer doing the phone off contract. You can get it unlocked, but not on PAYG.

Looks like we'll have to find another country. Anyone got any friends in Belgium??
