Thumbs up Data settings for iPhone in UAE

Queation to people who have it unlocked- what settings are you using for data? As in GPRS/Edge. There is a menu and I've tried etisalat.ae as the access point with mnet as username and password but that didnt help.

I have the 50MB per month plan from Etisalat for which I pay 95 Dirhams. Now this is basically for 3G services and I use most of my phones with it for Push Email etc. However, since the iPhone has Edge or GPRS, I'm not sure if it is included in that plan or not.

Just off the phone with Etisalat, and they said they don't provide EDGE over GPRS :-s

As a prepaid customer, I have tried numerous settings, none of which work (i.e. mnet, waselmnet, etisalat.ae, ...)

Q1.) From where are the settings to be entered? 'EDGE' or from under 'VPN' (not sure why you have mentioned it, unless you ment APN?)

Q2.) What is the APN for prepaid customers?

Q3.) Does the Username and Password have to be filled out? if so, what is it and is it case sensitive?

    Thanks.

Please share if anyone is experienceing the same, and maybe we can bash out this issue.

I am a Blackberry client at Etislat which means I recieve EDGE. I popped my sim out of that and into the iPhone. While I havent a clue in the world about the settings, when the WIFI is off, on the main screen next to the carrier logo, I get a small white box with an "E" in it.

Could this mean I am receiving signal, just not encoding or using it properly.

    Anyone?!

Okay Guys ... figured the solution to my problem.

If you were on Blackberry ... and now ur not ... do this.

on your iPhone go to settings ...

    General ---> Network

    Turn WIFI OFF!

EDGE ---> Fill out the following.

    APN: etisalat.ae
    Username: mnet
    Password mnet

    Thats it !

You will be charged like as if you were on your blackberry

    The Light

Ok guys, appreciate your'll posting on here. After many a sleepless night, finally here is the breakdown.

    - EDGE will not work with pre-paid (i.e. Wasel) customers, but only post-paid GSM subscribers.
    - If your a post-paid subscriber, on your iPhone the APN is: "etisalat.ae" and username and password are to be left blank. If you enter anything in there, it will be ignored anyways, and so doesn't make a difference.
    - Thirdly and most importantly, with Etisalat you need to be subscribed to a Data Package, i.e. the same as the blackberry. AED 185 for unlimited domestic is good, yet still too pricey. With Du the APN is "du" and once again no user ID or password required.

I have tried using it out and my experience with the speed was pretty acceptable actually.
