First, a suggestion -- edit your post and delete your actual user ID to protect your own privcacy.

The "USER NAME is not responding message" can mean a lot of things from a shortage of memory on one or both of the iChat computers to a lack of bandwidth or software conflicts.

Try an iChat with nothing else running except iChat on either machine (your and the other person). Try also restarting both computers.

How do you connect to the internet? Through a shared cconnection in an apartment? Wirelessly? Try doing a test of your internet connection speed and report back the results.

I don't know if the person in the UK needs to change anything (except that they should try restarting their Mac). We will first concentrate on you. A few things to try (in no particular order):

1) Close down all applications, reboot and then try doing an iChat with only iChat running (nothing else). See if that works. First try inviting the person in the UK to the chat. If that doesn't work, let them try inviting you. See if there's any difference.

2) Try doing an audio chat and a vide chat with somebody else in the UAE.

3) Go to http://www.dslreports.com/stest or to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ or one of the other many speed test sites on the internet and run a test to see what bandwidth you are getting. (512 is what you are paying for, you might be getting much less especially if other users share your internet connection). You might also try the speed test (and the audio/video chats) at different times of day because sometimes the bandwidth varies according to time of day.

4) Go to System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming to make sure your Quicktime preferences are set as high as possible (at least 1Mbps Cable).

5) If none of this works, click on the link at the bottom of my original post for a link to Ralph Johns troubleshooting pages. He gives more detailed technical advice including a discussion of port forwarding.

Did you try setting your Mac on your router's DMZ? (see your router's manual for how to do that)

For us to be able to help you, you have to be as specific as you can when it comes to things like error messages. We don't know what "some error message" means. Screenshots may help.

You didn't say whether you had tried any of the speed tests DxB Law pointed you to. What was the speed they reported?

Did you try any of all the troubleshooting suggestions on Ralph Johns' site, like suggested by DxB Law?

iChat is notoriously bandwidth-hungry and can give you all kinds of problems if it doesn't have enough bandwidth. I don't know whether you have too little bandwidth, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is too little.

Setting a computer on the DMZ basically means that that particular computer "bypasses" the router's various kind of forwarding and filtering, and connects directly to the internet, even though it does it through the router. If a computer is on the DMZ and there is no firewall on the computer running, then it's wide open without any restrictions to the wider network. So it's something to try with these sorts of problems. As I said in the earlier post, you would have to check the manual for your router/modem to see if it supports DMZ and how to set it up.

Don't know another name of it than DMZ. It may be that your router doesn't support DMZ.
