    Hi friends,

I have recently got this FTTH internet connection in my flat at Nahda-Dubai. I didn't opted to buy router from Etisalat as I had Linksys WAG200G wireless router (with 2 antennas). Technicians from Etisalat came & placed Huawei fibre optic modem and connected it with my Linksys router with a ethernet cable (from LAN to LAN).

Now I have to dial this PPPoE connection everytime I want to used internet on my PC (either wired or wireless). The problem is with cell phones. My roommates have cell phones with wireless feature & they want to connect to my wireless. But I cannot setup a PPPoE connection in their mobiles (which I guess cannot be done).

I want to know which router I have to use to connect with this fibre optic modem so that we can connect directly to internet without needing to dial PPPoE connection from PCs or mobiles. And also if anyone can tell me how to setup it.

Please help me. I will be very thankful you.

Okay, I'm confused here. Let me explain something:

Before Etisluts rolled out the FTTH garbage, I had a ADSL connection (phone line, RJ11) connected to my Linksys WAG200G, which was also my wireless gatway. To connect to the Internet, I just had to connect to the router wirelessly, and it worked.

Now, they've given me a crappy Aztech ADSL modem, but its connected to my wall socket using a network cable (RJ45), and the wallsocket is connected to the white box which they must've connected initially. To connect to the internet, we connect to this modem wirelessly, no dialup connection needed. But for purpose of diagnosing a connectivity problem, we can connect a laptop directly to the wall socket but for this, we need to establish a dial up connection with our Internet connections username and passwords.

Have you tried logging into your modem? We never bought a modem from Etisalat, but Etisalat provided us with a free (albeit crappy) modem, which is why they provide support to us. It really depends on the parameters configured on the modem, under PPPoE.

Unplug the Aztech ADSL model, open your window and throw it as far as you can. Then get a proper Wireless Router WITHOUT an ADSL model in it and connect it to the white box with the RJ45 cable. IIRC, you might need some settings, but you can get those by calling the Etisalat "tech reps". They might tell you they will need to send a "technician" to your location, but dont give up and and don't hang up until he gives you the settings.

I think that Etisalat overstocked on the ADSL modems so instead of providing their customers with proper hardware, they unload unwanted modems onto people who don't need them.

    @Mushroom. So right.
@abdulsami, like the guys said. You need a wireless router that can establish a PPPoE connection.
Once you have that, it will open the connection, and keep it open, so other devices can use it.
If it has a DSL modem, then its not a problem, you will simply not use that feature.

    Thank you uys for replying.

I have another router Linksys WAG54GX2. Can I use this modem for establishing PPPoE connection with the white box?? I guess this one is also an ADSL modem only.

I think I need to get a broadband router. Etisalat told me to get a Gigaset 504 router.

I will get it and then I will post my comment.

Considering your experience with configuring such things is less, I would suggest buying a good quality Etisalat approved router (if there is such a thing, hehe). Save yourself the hassle!

Yes, my experience in configuring is average. But unless I don't try things, how will I learn? Since I am working as an IT person, I need to learn these things.

And Etisalat just simply says buy another modem & we can help you. They don't want to help with my existing router.

Apologies for that, I meant it in a helpful way bud! Insist on them supplying you with a modem, or a replacement if the current one sucks. Mine does, but I've lost patience so I just reboot it and voila, it works. If they don't help you with your current modem, at least insist on asking them for the parameters, then do it yourself, at least Linksys modems let you save the configuration in case you mess up, the Aztech they've provided doesn't!

I'm all for experimenting though, so good luck!

Etisalat technician just called and said they wanted to "upgrade" cables in our apartment to fibre. Guess I'll see when I get home what's happened

Expect a ridiculously long downtime, many visits, none of them actually completing an installation! My sincere condolences for your Internet connection M.
