How to BOOST my DU internet speed? Hey Folks... My internet speed is good - but like always I want to try to boost and maximize the full capabilities of my Du 1mb line When I download a file, say it's 100mb, it downloads at average 115kb (i think that's per sec, not sure, but that's the average speed I see when it's downloading). Now is there something I can do, any settings, maybe proxies I could set up to boost up my connection? I know when I used to be on Etisalat they gave me a proxy to put in my connect to boost it up and it did help (a little). Let me know your tips & tricks plz. -Joey

the tests look good, 1 mb means 1 mega bit download speed, which is the same as 1024 kb, if u want in bytes then divide by 8, and its 128 kilo Bytes/ second, so ur download speed at 115 KB/s is acceptable, not that bad. actually u will never reach anywhere near 128. the speedtest website calculates in bits not bytes, and it gave u 989 kbit/sec which is good for a 1024 kbit connection still the upload speed is high, usually in DSL lines the up speed should be half the down speed, weird!! FYI, when they write small (b) that means bits, when using (B) it means bytes.

Thanks so much! That was such a helpful post! So KB is bigger than kb. I always get confused between bit & bytes, which is bigger and which is smaller... Also sometimes when I'm downloading for the first 10seconds or so, the download speed is like 340kb and then goes down to the norm of 110-120KB (kilo bytes - which is bigger than kb - kilo bits) Question, what about MB & mb? Is there a diff? Mega Bytes & Mega Bits (or I'm just talking rubbish?) Let me know Thanks again. -JOey

for the speed at first seconds, its not the connection speed, its the application speed, some of the applications are smart and they start buffering the data even before u click the start download button. and sometimes its just a wrong number for the KB, kB, kb, mB, MB, mb .. etc u r right, same for megabytes (mB or MB), megabits (mb or Mb) the first letter case is not important. same for gigabyte (GB or gB) and gigabit (gb or Gb) there is always wiki for more info

Keep in mind that most Du connections are actually ethernet connections and not DSL. This may explain why the upload is so high. I'm assuming they aren't throttling the upload. As for boosting it, I don't see how. You may be able to connect to a faster server through proxies or the sort, but essentially it would be a slower connection. Imagine driving really fast to the supermarket only to wait in line because the jerk clerk is too slow. Also, a lot of slowdowns are due to the service you are connecting to, and not your connection. As for Kilo, Mega, etc. They are multiples of 1000 (in computing they are multiples of 1024). Hence KiloMeter is 1000 meters, KiloGram is 1000 grams, etc.
