Smile Internet in Dubai?

Hi there,

I just joined this User-Group and startet reading. I'm from Munich, Germany and I run myself a PC & MAC Computerservice for a couple of years now here in Munich and I think about, moving to Abu Dhabi in the next 1-2 years to do there what I am best of - Tec-Support :-)

My question is, what else kind of trouble are there in the UAE with internet lines - can you describe yours if you have some, and would you tell me in which area you live? Would you post your DL/UL speeds for me? I am interessted, what I have to deal with when I move to you and in which area is tec-help mainly needed to build up my empire *LOL*. I guess, you all live in Dubai, right?

Thanks in advance for your support,

Jürgen

Environment:
I have here in the southwest of Munich an 13.000 DL/1.200 UL ADSL2+,
7170 WLAN FritzBox Router (very good features!) , Netgear 8er Hub, several PCs & MACs.

ok, so i live in Abu Dhabi... Corniche towers... my connection is a 2mbps connection with DL of 1950 during off-peak hours and 1250 during peak hours. UL stays from 100-180 depending on time. the problems you will face is Customer Reps not knowing ANYTHING as to how to make ur connection work if it chokes on you, maximum speed you can get is 4Mbps for now, but they're putting fibre-optics. should go upto 32Mbps. the charges will be PHENOMINAL for the old and new connections. i guess that should cover things

lol, 1950 kilobytes per sec yakhi,,, im on a 2mbps connection, which effectively means that it should show 2048kbps, but the max i've gotten is 1958.... anyway, if you download from an ftp server or a p2p program, you get maximum donwload speeds of 235 kilobytes per second...

Welcome to the site Jürgen,

Im in Abu Dhabi too, i have 2 mbps, and its good, i wont say its perfect though, download speeds are almost the same as noixe, 2 mega bits/sec is not bad it works very good for browsing specially with Firefox , and for downloading i download movies at night, it takes few hours to get a 700 MB movie.

Thats talking about DSL, but u can get upto 7 mbps with wireless router, but u will need a dataplan, so not effective for a tech-support , but im sure it will become cheaper with time.

You r saying u will come after 1 year, i think by that time it will be better, first Fiber-optics and second competition between etisilat and du (the 2 and only telecommunication companies)

welcome again

Thanks to all

Hi there,

first of all thanks for your response. I would really appreciate, if some more users would put their comments about speed here. If there would be enough data, I can draw a map where internet is great in the emirates and where is work to do.

Is there no faster internet connection that 2 MBit/s right now or is that just too expensive maybe? How much costs a 2 MBit/s line a month?

A hint for all:
Here in Munich its combined with the telephone line - you pay around 36 Euro a month for analog telephone flatrate for germany (except mobile and voting numbers!) included flatrate ADSL2+ up to 18.000 (what is a usual 2 MByte line).

I recommend everybody with a flat or house in Munich or Bavaria to use M-net. Why? Because their policies are that nobody would be cancelled because of the amount of traffic. I had last year only in February 426 GB data transfer and every month aorund 200-300 GB. So if you like downloading - M-net is the best choice. I have that for 4 years now where I live right now and the lines and the support is great. Other providers will send you a notice of cancellation when you have more that 50 GB traffic. If somebody is interessted in internet lines in Germany - I am happy to talk about what I have seen and worked with in the last 15 years.

Jürgen

PS: A last off-topic question ... in the UAE there are a lot of falcons, does the people have cats (like I have for ex.!) and is there trouble with falcons and cats?
