Replacing Siemens Gigaset SE568 Router - with what??

Any thoughts on this? Was on the phone to Etisalat for ages today as internet at home was really abysmal. Tried everything (girl was really helpful) and we concluded the Siemens router (bought from Etislat) is not working that well. Pages take an age to load and downloads. forget it!! Obviously tried all the things like re-booting etc. Hard wire connection straight into the fibre-optic box works fine.

She suggested either calling Siemens to see if there is software upgrades that might help) or buying a new router. She suggested the Etislat Atech (or is it Aztic) as it is for wireless broadband and is what they install (and support). yet to go and check availability and prices and am tempted to check Netgear and Lynksys also.

Main concern is that it WILL work with the Etisalat F/O box and of course the Etisalat support for it MIGHT be a bonus. Need to see the price difference between the Aztech and Netgear though. Use Netgear in UK and always been happy.

This Siemens I have is rubbish. At its best it often needs to be re-started at least once.

    Looked round shops.

Seeme to be that Linksys and Netgear are available. The SE568 I had seemed to work OK prior to the fibre optic upgrade but, despite Etisalat guys doing a firmware upgrade to it, it's never been THAT good since. In any event it seems quite a rubbishy piece of kit.

Shops have the Lynksys WAG 160N and the Netgear 3000. Not cheap but if I have to buy one at all I figure I'd be better getting a good one and upgrading my Netgear DG834PN when I get home. I have a feeling the Etisalat Aztech might be similar in spec and quality to the Siemens so may not go that route.

from 700-1000 AED depending on where u buy from
it has a built in screen that tells u every user using the router and also what is the speed of total download with a really wide wireless range

Get the D-Link DIR-825. After a LOT of research came to the conclusion that it's in the Top 3 best routers out there. But make sure you get Revision B1 as the internals (hardware) are very different from the Original release. I got it from Khalid Bin Waleed for about 450/-

Cool Make use of old Siemens GE568 for GPON connection

If you need to upgrade your Siemens Gigaset GE568 from Etisalat to work with the new generation internet connection – GPON, please follow this instruction:

In order to get the GPON device to work with ADSL Siemens Gigaset GE568 modem, you have to upgrade the firm on Siemens Gigaset GE568 other wise you won’t be able to make use of 4th port LANWAN to use with GPON modem.

You can download the firmware from SE568-Firmware - Windows Live and unzip to a folder.

    Please follow these steps:

    1. Reset you modem with a paper clip and make sure that you are getting access to the modem with http://192.168.254.254
    2. If successful close the browser.
    3. Double click Update_E652-A1S_115-37_6045_v1r.exe from the downloaded file and follow the instruction on the screen.

Once the procedures are successful the modem will reboot - then
Login to the modem with http://192.168.254.254 and do the wizard setup with any dummy account (this you can delete after you configure WAN with Ethernet port). There are 5 steps to be completed !! in order to get rid of the wizard.

Once the wizard finished, you will be getting the old screen, from the left menu choose ISP connection and on right side click on Advanced settings and from next page select Configure the ATM Virtual Circuit and select the dummy created account and delete it and give a reboot.

After reboot login to the modem and from the left menu select Home Network and select Advanced settings and here you can see the Configure the Local SpeedStream Gateway LAN/WAN Port select to proceed here you can decide how you want to use the LAN/WAN port. Select WAN – the apply – this will take you to next page here also select PPPoE and select Add a New PPPoE Session and complete the configuration then apply finally HAVE TO boot the router to apply the required changes.

Finally you are done: Login to the modem again and select the ISP connection from the left menu on the right side you can see

    Ethernet 4
    DOWN

Click on this to configure you actual ISP credentials to access the ADSL through WAN port (Ethernet 4 port)

Happy surfing – reuse you old modem – save the planet !!!
