Selling while teaching..

Repeatedly students come to me for an advice to buy a Mac for their first time, I take them for a spin in the macworld, next time I see them they have a MacBook or a MacBook Pro.

A new university student today couldn't hold her amusement for feeling a my own MacBook Pro perform in class demonstration "Speech Recognition" for the first time, she started showing her class mates MacBook images on the net during my IT introduction and said she will get a MacBook at once.

Question aren't we EMUGers getting any better discount than this 5%. We can certainly with this kind of exposure convince more people whether at the office or in education sector to move them into more awarding Mac experience.

IMC I ask for 12% discount for EmiratesMac so that we continue this trend.

Good story, Zaid. I agree, we should get better than 5%. IMC is working on redoing the membership deal, and have been doing so for all of 2007 so far.

They probably think about it in terms of accounting, and lost revenue. I say that one of the best things they could do is sell to EMUGers at a really good price. That would show their support for the only Mac community in the UAE, and give a really good reason for people to join.

All that said, I think it's good that they are giving any sort of membership deal.

Last week, I've purchased MacBook, I did not get even 5% & you think we should get 12%

heh! they were surprised that I asked for the 5%, I felt like it had never happened before...

I just ignored them and bought the MacBook, and left.

edit
...
one more thing, they actually offered me 159DHS shuffle - Original 399, which is good. but I don't want to open a shop in my house selling iPods and shuffles!

ACN Discount / GnuDarwin / Installfest

As a plus member of the apple consulting network (ACN) I get the following:

• Access to valuable members-only resources
• Updates on products, services, and programs
• Certification training and exam discounts
• Use of the program's logo to promote affiliation with Apple
• Third-party promotions and discounts
• Marketing resources for building your business
• Free website hosting
• Free and discounted Apple-branded Not For Resale (NFR) software
• Discounts and promotions at the online member store
• Use of Apple equipment for demonstrations and presentations

However most of the benefits are of course completely useless to me as I get no access to them outside of the US. (with the obvious exception of the discount at the apple store as I can just get it shipped to my office in the states).

I think Apple ME should speak with Apple in the US and get the apple ACN benefits moved over here. Third party marketing resources, apple demo equipment etc would definitely benefit the local EMUG and also apple VARs and System Integrators that are trying to penetrate the market.

The Dubai Linux User Group (of which I am a moderator) doo installfests every now and again and try to introduce the public at large to linux. Something the EMUG could also do provided that we had the equipment to perform demos. Rather than installing Linux we could do installfests using Gnu/Darwin. That way people at least can get a feel of the Mac OS although they don't have the hardware. Although we can obviously install GNU/Darwin on apple hardware.... Just an Idea

I think the installfest thing is a good idea. We're working on a couple of things that we hope to announce in the near future and we'll take that into consideration certainly.
