| Gallery should be upgraded ;) i have a couple of idea for the Gallery site... we should change a bit, cause i personly think that usualy pictures are what attract alot of costumers. therefore we should work hard to provied realy nice photos and more organised Gallery... specialy that i love to contribute alot with pictures anywho... the ideas i had were first and far most important: the categories should be expanded... 1)Apple Events 2)Apple Stores Around the World 3)Apple products 4)Apple Future products 5)Apple car stickers in the UAE 6)Steve Jobs 7)Desktop & Wallpapers 8)Mac Setups and Configurations .... i guess thats it for now... next we should have a link that shows us "Most Viewed" and "Top Rated" What do u think EmiratesMac???? if i have anymore ideas i will post it... |

| Some good suggestions, AppleHolic. There is a "pro" version of PhotoPlog, which is what we use for the Gallery, and it's $35. It offers some more functionality. I've raised the limit for users to 500 uploads, so you should be able to put more there. Eventually we have to face an issue of storage space on the server where we're hosted, and we'll have to pay extra for more space probably. I'm going to work on the gallery categories over the weekend. I think we can accomodate most of your wishes. The link for "most viewed" or "top rated", where is it you want that to appear? |

| The whole "Gallery" section of the site is run by a software called PhotoPlog. There's a link in my previous post that compares the "pro" version and the "lite" version. We currently run the "lite version". Storage space is not a problem yet. We have total 6Gb space and we use close to 1Gb of that so far. Space is not a problem right now, but it's going to be an issue at some point. Being the guy who runs this place that's something that's on my mind but it's not really something users should have to think about. |

Now if we did have our own server, like I've mentioned in some other threads (like here), then we could probably have the hosting company add a hard drive. Even better, if we had our own server and it was in a location that we could physically access, we could obviously do whatever we wanted with it. But all that cost a lot of money.... | Any XServe would work very well A bigger issue than the actual hardware is the location and the internet connection. Whatever server would have to be on a business-class connection with a fixed IP address and physically located in a safe server hosting environment. So someone's home DSL connection wouldn't work I don't even know if such a place exists in the UAE and what it would cost. There are companies offering what's called "colocation" or "colo" services, which basically means you put your computer in the hosting provider's location and control it remotely. Look at MacMiniColo, for example. Here's another place which offers colo and shared Xserve hosting. A problem with colo if it's far away like the US is that whatever needs to be physically done to the Mac-server we would have to pay for most likely. |
