DU to Linksys Problems

Ok, this is a good one for you smart gurus out there. Besides i couldnt be on line for another minute with the tech person at DU who conveniently tells me "Sir, you can only connect one computer to your du connection, for another computer you pay 100AED extra and get another point activated" :d i love this business i could be a millionaire in less than 1 week here !

Anyhu, I went and bought this Linksys router WAG200G, and when i come home and try to connect it, i see the traditional telephone socket that says "Line" so i am gussing it uses the old internet connection basis (RJ14 i think), etisalat used to give before they learned about LAN connections. Has anyone been successful in using an ADSL+Router hardware with the DU lan connection ? Or are there hardwares that i am unaware which take in RJ45 cables as the main line ?

Cheers

Why don't you get an Airport Express and connect it to the socket.
That way, all of machines connect wirelessly.

I knew that would have been a good idea, but thought of going with my convensional thinking of modem+router. Even if i decide to buy an express, i will have this new linksys hardware just sitting there (and i thought money management was smart) the linksys was for 299 from i2 abu dhabi mall (compume), can i return it to them today at compu me in mall of the emirates ? will they take an opened hardware back ?

Some places do, providing you have the receipt.

I do, as i just bought it yesterday (i have atm slips a year old, reminds me i have to clean up all that junk ) leme see if anyone in my office has come up with a solution, because i cant buy that du supports only wired connection to one computer. So many people around me have wireless on du and belkin / linksys routers. The du folks told me that THEY dont provide any information on how to set up a router, but i can call some independent contractor and get it done. #$%@

But i am correct in the way i connected rite ? I mean the linksys takes in a telephone socket (RJ11/14) as input and the other end also the same connection type, but it fits right into the LAN wall point of DU. So i am assuming that even if my telephone like wire is connected to the LAN wall out it would still connect. Please tell me what line are you taking out from your wall point to your router (for internet). Is it a normal telephone 4 pin/6pin socket (RJ11/14) or is it a RJ45 LAN wire.

ok i called up compume and they would accept it back (lets see if this happens in person) but if they do i can exchange it and not get cash back so i would go for a belkin router that takes RJ45 as input from internet so will that work ?

How many of you having wireless routers are conected via RJ45 (lan cable directly from the wall) please give in some input so i dont make the same mistake twice.

Cheers.

I don't know DU connections, to be honest.
But I heard it doesn't require a modem/router.

If this is the case then any wirless access point should work.
You would connect the AP via network cable (RJ45) and then your computers will connect via wireless.
Set the AP to receive DHCP settings, and create NAT (a seperate network internally).
Enable DHCP for the internal network.

Note that RJ45 is network, RJ11 is phone.

Aight i get it. So as you mentioned i connect a modem+router via RJ45, hmm so the hardware needs an RJ45 input (WAN) rather than a normal telephone line input (which i have right now). Will go and check out some belkin babies as they support mac and pcs both. I have seen a few, does anyone here use these models with DU ?

Belkin : Wireless G+ MIMO Modem Router
Belkin : Wireless G Router
D-Link DSL-2640T 54Mbps (802.11g) Wireless ADSL 2/2+ Router with Built-in Modem, 4-port 10/100Mbps Switch

Thanks for your support fangpyre, really appreciate it

Hi Gajanan,

Welcome to EmiratesMac!

What kind of cable comes from the wall outlet? Is it an RJ-11 line or is it an RJ-45 cable? If its the latter, you don't have any problems at all. If its the former than there is a very simple solution to it i.e. D-link DSl-2740B which is Wireless-N router and hence will give you much more stable and faster speeds.

If you have any other questions, fire away.

Regards.
