| Psystar Open Mac Have any of you been aware of the Psystar OSx86 project. it was supposed to be geared at creating an open source Mac. Bet some of the big fish would love that! Well the plug has been finally pulled and the web site has disappeared. Intriguing stuff. Here is the link to the article: Mac OS X seller (not Apple) disappears after reports | One More Thing - CNET News.com cheers |

I spotted an ad for these guys a week ago vi my gmail account. After a quick trip to their site and seeing what they had done I knew they were destined to be wiped form the surface of the earth by the apple legal team. Not sure if you have ever heard of OpenDarwin, but it was an apple approved open source version of OSX, running on the PPC architecture. Apple openly supported the group and gave them code for the project, until their [apple] move to the intel platform. Once that happened apple stated that the intel code was now closed source, and open darwin died a quiet death. Dan | |

| "OSx86," OpenMac, & the future of Apple It's no wonder that Psystar got so much attention last few days. Here an interesting article I came across about it. Wrote by Blogger and CliveAtFive of HardMac. Quote:

| Word is Apple has a better technical fight than it does a legal. The EULA doesn't have enough power to close them shut. But since Psystar uses the standard OSX, Apple has the power to disable it with updates. You can get away with not updating your iPhone, but not your OS. You end up missing out on features & stability. Plus, its hard to establish a business and tell your customers you can't update. And Apple can even throw in the lock with Quicktime and iTunes. |

The open source world, much like mother nature has a way of correcting things. Chances are that you will get a whole bunch of people behind Psystar, and you will start to see open source repositories for OSX patches. Apple has rubbed a lot of open source people and security people the wrong way, and it might just be enough to start the open apple revolution. The patch upgrade mechanism is already there - fink. You will just need to add some open source repositories for patches, and that will be it. Apple has opened a lot of its source code up for developers etc who agree to the licensing. | I don't think Pystar is based on open source. It seems they are using something similar to OSx86 project. Because the word is that they are using an original Leopard installation CD that is legally purchased. For those of you who don't know. Intel Macs are essentially PCs, with 2 exceptions, OSX and EFI. EFI replaces the BIOS used in PCs. Bootcamp makes Windows think it sees a BIOS. OSx86 makes OSX think it sees an EFI. But even if Pystar doesn't use open source, it may make enough legal progress to open the door for some one that will. Interested in a business venture? |
