Data Recovery & Warranty A friend of mine has a MacBook black where the hard disk died. The hard disk is completely dead. We took it to a recovery service on SH. Zayed Rd. And they weren't able to do anything with it locally. So here is where we stand: - The hard disk WILL be disassembled. - It will be done in the USA or Canada. Now here is the problem. Opening the HDD will void Apple's warranty. And the service center can't give us back the HDD. So they say we will have to buy a new HDD at 1,420 Dhs (for a 160GB) if we want to get the HDD back. Otherwise, they will honor the warranty but keep the disc to send to Apple. Apple's web site says that it will honor the warranty if the disk has the seal from DiskSavers or OnTrack Typically, if the factory seal on the hard drive is broken or removed, the hard drive will be excluded from coverage, however, if an authorized DriveSavers or OnTrack label is on such a hard drive, Apple will not exclude coverage on that basis.Hard Drive Data Recovery & Warranty Implications Any idea how we can work around this, or get the local ABM center to agree to the above?

Isn't the HDD in a macbook a user replaceable part? If so, can't you just take out the bad hdd, get your data off it thru a specialist, and then buy a new hard disk instead on your own rather then from the service center at almost half the price quoted to you. I assume your machine should yet be under the warranty coverage. Also have you tried MORE computers in Dubai? I have had a friend who had a hdd beyond repair as well, and those people were able to yet recover the data for him.

If push comes to shove, I won't buy a disk from Apple. But it seems weird that I would have to buy a new disk when this one is still under warranty. All I want is to recover my data. A problem that only exists due to manufacturing defects. I haven't tried More, but I was tld about them. However, the damage seems to be too extensive. In my opinion, there is no way to recover the data without cracking it open.
