G5 powermac upgrade

Hi!

I recently bought Aperture for a dual 1.8 Ghz G5 power PC.

Enter the problem:
it doesn't like the Geforce FX5200 currently installed and I need to upgrade; it is AGP.

I've asked around a few places on the internet about whether or not it needs to be a mac specific card and no one seems to know the answer for sure, so if anyone could answer that much I would be grateful.

Other than that; I've already called two mac stores in the UAE (the one in Ibn Battuta and Pro-Tech on SZR), both have said they'll order in a card which will take ~2 weeks, I was wondering if anyone knew another shop in .ae that would stock this kind of stuff?

Thank you in advance for any assistance!
Sincerely,
Sam

Electronic shops...

You didn't mention which Graphics Card you ought to buy!

I remember seing quality Graphics cards at CompuMe (Garhoud / Mall of the Emirates), Plug-ins, and Sharif electronics opposite to Mac Store at Ibn Battouta mall.

Above stores should have some decent quality Graphics Cards, yet you need to do a research before spending more money (after buying DP G5) on such card. The last thing you want is to install a card to find it incompatible again.

We liked your Blog on Customer Services though

sites to check...

I am sure you checked about this issue elsewhere. I also fetched these three relevant links for you to inspect. Frankly it doesn't look clear to me whether there is a specific Graphics Card that you can rely on for the moment unfortunately!

first of all, u should try installing Aperture again, cause Aperture on the website is mentioned to work on every G5 machine... i have an iMac G5 2GHZ and it works more than perfectly... it even works on my Mac mini intel... but it doesnt work on the first patch of G4 powerbook 2003 models. so i would segest u try installing it again...

as for the Graphic cards, i would high recomend, getting on Apple.com, and go to support, and look for ur Machine, when u find it, they should have Spec. Sheet available with all the Upgradable parts that can be installed. therefore, if u want a graphic card, check which graphic cards they use, and that should be all the options which u can buy to add. so if its a Geforce whatever or anything else, take that number and look for it in other computer stores, i would highly not recomend u installing any Graphic card that is not mentioned at Apple.com

I think Appleholic has some good advice. My guess is that you would be okay with any card that you know that Apple put - or has previously put - in a Powermac G5. Then you know there are drivers for it and that it should be compatible with the Mac.

Thank you for your responses!

One of the shops I contacted can only order one variety of card, an ATI 9800 pro if i'm not mistaken, retailing for ~1700-1800 dhs which is a bit overkill for a piece of software that costs around that mark to begin with.

As for the suggestion I install aperture again; I physically cannot.
the installer stops from the beginning and says the video card sucks.

I'm thinking about ordering the graphics card online; however amazon.com is being extra nice and won't let me ship any sort of video card to the middle of the desert /:
the rest seem to be out of stock...

anyone around here have a semi-good apple&aperture-compatible AGP graphics card they want to part with for a small bundle of money?

I ordered the 9800 pro from an american site earlier today for about 500 dirhams less (including the postage cost!) than the dubai-based shop was offering!

I hope it works when i put it in!

Anyway, thank you everyone for your assistance!

We didn't really do much, but you're welcome. Please let us know how it works out with the card.
