My first guess is software.
If you can, try to start a new user, and see if that works.
Also, try booting thru the DVD and repair permissions.
My iMac G5 is having start up problems.
When I boot up it goes to the usual desktop.
Then after 15 seconds the screen goes blank and the desktop reappears again.
This keeps going round in a continuous loop and no programs seem to open in the 15 second window it appears to be working.
Is this a hardware issue or software or can any body give me some idea what to do.

Now i have time to play around. I have narrowed the problem down.
If I boot up without my ethernet connection no problems. As soon as I connect the internet ethernet cable the problem shows up????
I understand the ethernet connection is built into the mother board???
Shall I start saving for a new iMac?
I'd try reinstalling the system first.
It may be a hardware issue.
If it is, I would agree its not worth fixing.
But you can also get a USB ethernet (used for the MacBook Air).
Also consider getting airport/wifi working.
