Like you said.
Both are really great machines.
Both have amazing graphics, and are great media centers.
Both have strong online presence, which makes the gaming experience something else.
There are 3 decisive points that you need to consider.
1) Bluray. The PS3 can play Bluray disks, unlike Xbox. In fact it is probably the best Bluray disk you can ever buy. In fact many reviews compare Bluray drives to the PS3.
2) Games. You need to find out what games you will be playing. There are games you won't find on another platform. XBox has the majority of exclusive software. For example Halo isn't available on the the PS3.
3) Price. You can get a cheap XBox if you want. But serious users will find themselves getting the more advanced systems.
Another minor point is that the PS3 can take Linux and become a full fledged computer.
I think as far as hardware is concerned, the PS3 is the stronger machine.
But what matters is how it is used.
