richard, send yourself a message with the full international dialing code and see if you receive it. if you can send messages you can most definitely receive them.

send using the format:

For ETISALAT +97150 XXXXXXX
For du +97155 XXXXXXX

If it does receive you're golden...

richywendy,
Did you get this solved?

My friend gave me his phone to fix and it has the same problem.
I was told to use bbupdater, but I never got around to doing it.

i couple of my friends got the same problem... it seems like the place they boughted from did not unlock the iPhone properly... all i did was deverganize the iPhone and made it look like it was never unlocked and then updated it to firmware 1.1.1 and unlocked it and it worked like a charm... follow those steps and u will be a happy iPhone user .. how u ask? simple, google these steps and u will find ur answer my friend

I tried to bbupdate, but it didn't work.
I will try to update it to 1.1.1 as per Appleholic's recommendation.

I was considering that before I read your post.
But I was reluctant to go ahead with it.

okay, i got Arabic sms to work now.. i figuered out what my little problem was... its working now..

as for the iPhone update... fangpyre, i have good news.. updateing the iPhone just got easier and easier... let me give u a hint... in AppInstaller on ur iPhone... go to sources and add this source... " http://i.unlock.no" when u do that and u refresh ur sources u can go to the iNSTALL area and u will find a new category called "Unlock Tools" they have everything u need from virginizing ur firmware to updating to the latest iPhone version... enjoy... just go to there site and read there instruction just to be extra careful

P.S when u add this source and have that new category all the softwares u see in-front of u, are sooooo amazing that u can viginize ur iPhone automatically without having to lay ur hands on terminal in ur mac... so other than plugging ur iphone to itunes to update the software u will not have to use ur computer anymore.. these software will help u with everything u need for ur update

Hmm... let it stop at giving a hint, not giving the whole answer

sms issues

hi all ,

sorted.

trawl google and you will find a few sites relating to this issue, seems the phone was only partially unlocked.

I found helpfull info at Unlock the iPhone - the simple tutorial!

Of course you make your own judgement call as did I and its up to you.

cheers richard
