Basically, as you say - there's a lot of inappropriate material out there. There are a lot of clips my daughter likes to watch on Youtube that are just fine, but I've been caught by surprise by some of them she's looked at. Anyway, that's a problem I need to address regardless of what system we choose.

I'll check out the Apple store in IBM tomorrow for prices. DH is in Jakarta at the moment so we can compare.

Parental controls are site specific, and those that arent you can probably download software for free.

I would never use anything but Mac and Ubuntu personally, but for a 9 year old, Im sure she'll be given apps and CDs by school that will be Windoze only. That should be a big factor in choosing a PC for kids.

Most schools (hell, most universities here) arent anything but Windoze friendly.

Thanks.

So far all she's brought home are word docs and powerpoint presentations so no problem there.

For anything else would software like Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop etc. help with or solve that problem?

Yes, with Bootcamp (which is free from Apple) you partition the drive and put Windows on one partition and you can boot into Windows. With Fusion or Parallels you run Windows like another Mac app in a window in Mac OS X. In all cases you need a copy of Windows (XP or Vista). There are benefits and drawbacks of both approaches, which you pick depends mostly on what you need to run in Windows.

Gasp! I should be slapped! I forgot that with our new Macs we can run anything! Discard my whole post above. the new Macs are the only machines that car run every major consumer OS out there, and thus giving you ultimate flexibility.

i dont think she'll bring home anything but word documents, excel sheets and powerpoint presentations.. i remember me never getting anything except for tht, even uptil grade 11... and then came M$ Access and later on came languages like VB and C++... i think even if she gets the mac, she'll be in clear from the school project running point of view...
now the problem wit youtube... hmm, you can just block youtube altogether... youtube is still clean compared to a lot of other streaming sites...
having said all this, i WNA GO TO JKT!!!! i miss it amazing city and it'l be cheaper there fantadstic... hell, i love the exchange rate
