Ethanol in UAE

Based on our popular car thread... As you may now, large parts of the world are increasingly going to more environmentally friendly cars and fuels, for example ethanol. Is that even available at any stations in the UAE that you know of? They're often called flexifuel or biofuel or something similar.

There are fueling stations for NGV (Natural Gas Vehicles) run by ADNOC, I believe, are there any such stations in Dubai? And what would the choice be for NGVs (I mean what vehicles are available)?

There arent any that I've ever heard of in the UAE.

But please remember that a regular engine cant run ethanol. There are a few engines that, with major reflashing of the ECU, are able to, but they are very few.

E10 (90% gas, 10% ethanol) however can be run in most (like over 90%) of cars today.

I am against it personally because it gives a car an un-natural advantage (in a race)
Also it is basically drinking alcohol. sort of like mixing a triple black in with your gas.
And finally it is a biofuel, usually made of corn (in the US anyways) which means that you are using something that could help feed hungry human beings to run a machine. Very unethical in my opinion.

A side note, Methanol is another variant fuel that gets far less attention than ethanol. Sooner or later, especially if I decide to get a supercharger, I will need to have a methanol/water injection system in my car to make sure things dont go boom.

Ethanol (and methanol) are amazing for the environment, the byprodocts are WATER vapor. instead of carbon dioxide or monoxide. and they are, in a race, going to produce a bigger bang for your buck (gas has an octane count of 89,91,93,95,98... octane) any higher and you need to add lead. which most modern cars dont mix well with.

These biofuels are rated at about 115 octane! The only drawback is you will use MORE of it since the AFR of these fuels are under 10 (when gas is 14.7) Ive heard as low as 7! so you'll be filling up much more.

VERY good topic Magnus!!!!!!!!!

Just a side note on the corn issue.
If you think the poor people will get any of that corn, then you'd be drinking some of that gas you described above.
Companies and governments would rather destroy crops than let the price drop.
Unfortunately, they will not see any of it.

Well why I ask is that we're considering buying a new car (hence the question about the Jeep in the other thread), but here in Sweden you see plenty of cars that run on ethanol (natural gas is not that popular here), so hence the dilemma. I'd be willing to not get a 4WD in Dubai, and get something that's environmentally friendly instead. We have a V70 now and Volvo has a new V70 that runs on ethanol, for example. But if I can't buy such a car, ethanol, gas or whatever, in Dubai and if I can't fuel it, then that's it, isn't it?

No, Im not naive. Hell, even here the municipalities pay farmers for their tomatoes just to have them rot and be turned into fertilizer.

Found this : List of natural gas vehicles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , did i overlook this or is nissan not listed ? lol
and this : Adnoc to set up 11 CNG stations in Abu Dhabi emirate | EAD , this article was dated December 30th 2007, but i am assuming calling up ADNOC and getting the info.

FYI ultra, the ford focus is in the NGV list :P

Edit: found this on the Environment Agency website : Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi
"Al Maha Station was the 1st station in Abu Dhabi to supply CNG. " - Where is this ?

ENOC gives the UAE an environmental boost with new CNG fuel - Middle East News

But i see no mention of locations or date deadline unlike ADNOC. Guess they have their hands full till 2012 with traffic and construction lol.

Thanks for the info gajanan. Looks like Abu Dhabi is ahead of Dubai in this respect.
