Saturday is start of Ramada, Ramadan Kareem!

Very simple. the verse in the Quran that explains when fasting shall begin states that we should "Fast by it's (the moons) sighting"

The newborn moon MUST be SEEN with the naked eye. You can use telescopes to help you pinpoint it, but it must be able to be seen with the naked eye. For example, yesterday I believe the astronomy society of the UAE stated very clearly that the moon WAS infact born yesterday and would be faintly visible for a few minutes after sunset. And as you stated, the moon phases for the next 100s of years are calculated and known.

But no one actually saw it. The key is SEEING the new crescent. That is the religious term that must be met.

Just to expand on this.
The main reason nobody sees a born moon would be clouds, for example.

This very question is an open discussion among scholars.
But like Ultra said, they emphasize on the "sighting" as noted in the Quran.

However, they still refer to the calculations to ensure they are not off track.

So what did everyone have to eat? lol. I made myself sick off of Vimto and Laban... I could hardly eat anything. Though I did make some space for those triangular pastries filled with cream and some mini cakes.

I kid you not Ramadan has become more about TV and food than about religion. Such yummy food!

No one made Harees today though. *cries* They better make some tomorrow!

Why is it that Vimto is a big Ramadan thing?
I wonder if that is a good thing for the company.
They obviously make hoards of sales during Ramadan, but what about the rest of the year?

I'm not sure. All I know is Vimto has always been a Ramadan drink. That and Orange Tang.

I think the canned/bottled soft drink versions sell well all year round. I buy those weekly. But I see your point... We go thru 4 full cartons (thats 48 bottles) during Ramadan. lol. Hell, I break my fast on Vimto. So much for Dates and water.
