You're right. I also still use a 1st gen iPhone and the battery life is actually quite good. I hear the GPS and the 3G Modem is the big culprit when it comes to sucking the battery dry on the new one. I would recommend to always disable 3G and only switch it on if you need the extra bandwith. That saves battery and also frustration with etisalats dismal 3G coverage. It disconnects all the time (at least using the 3.5G Modem) anyways... I can almost set the watch to it, every 18 minutes it loses the signal and then goes back on, unless it's 2:00am (like right now)...
Ain't it the truth. 3G coverage is sporadic at best. Signal is sometimes not there at all, other times the connection seems to randomly drop out. A weak 3G signal probably makes the iPhone work harder -- thus putting an even greater drain on the battery.

Apple specs say you are supposed to get 5 hours talk time with 3G enabled and up to 300 hours standby with 3G at its default setting (don't know if that's "on" or "off").

I have not yet experimented running my iPhone battery completely down, but since my battery seems to be down at 25% no more than two or three hours after charging, there is no way I am getting 300 hours of standby or 5 hours of talk time. I'm wondering if I have a defective battery, or if this is really as good as it gets.

I could turn off 3G, but email is very slow in EDGE and Safari is dismal (I could have stuck with my Treo 650 if I wanted that slooooow internet experience).

I guess I'd better always carry my charger with me. . .

    Iphone

Following the threads. I assume the normal Al Wasel card will function as normal without having to take out a expensive plan?

I'm sure the prepaid card works in etisalat iPhones. But if you want to buy an iPhone through etisalat, you have to sign a contract.

If you like to use a prepaid card you have to buy a "grey market" phone.

Thanks very much. To my delight the Iphone is working fine with a Al Wasal card.

    Iphone Power Charger

Like all users of the the Iphone, I find it is power hungry. I spend a great deal of my time away from my car and normal power supplies. But have no fear the Monkey is here!
Passing through Heathrow I purchased the Power Monkey Explorer. It is a portable charger, ultra compact, tough and powerful. The package contains a solar slave, a universal charger which will work in over 150 countries and interchangeable heads for UK US, Australia and Europe. It also contains a complete range of gadget connectors, such as Blackberry's, Iphone, Seimens, etc etc. This all fits in a storage case that contains a travel pouch. This travel pouch is ideal when going walkabout. Just pop the fully charged power slave with your gadget connector into the pouch and stow in your briefcase or pocket. When the Ipod goes red just pop in the power slave and you will not become that aweful bore looking for a power supply, during a busy meeting. This slave will recharge my Iphone twice. Check out the site. info@powertraveller.com

Hey guys...this is my first post at Emirates Mac...

Finally I joined the apply family by getting an iPhone 3G 16GB (white)...I was waiting for it to be released officially in the UAE for a long time, and after Etisalat revealed it's price plans...I was shocked! I couldn't integerate my current postpaid with the new (as been told by etisalat) and the prices were extremely high...! It put me down until i was in Saudi Arabia couple of days back...and checked with Mobily...they have a prepaid package, 16 GB phone with a 6 month prepaid contract, giving you 250 MB each month for 2800 Riyals (2748 DHS)...with warranty 1 year. I asked the mobily guy who does take care if something goes wrong, he answered just take it to iStyle. I asked, will they accept it in the iStyle in Dubai? He said yes!!!

Forgot to mention, you got to recharge the prepaid they give you with 90 riyals (you get a total of 130 riyals talk time) to get 4 month validity + 2 month grace (total of 6 month)...so you don't get blacklisted there!

Liked to mention my story, incase anyone is interested and is going to Saudi

I don't understand why people are bothered to purchase the iPhone from Etisalat. Just doesn't make sense. As always Etisalat is out to get you, their charges are simply horrific in my opinion. I do require the data usage tbh but its not like i am at the bank or somewhere outside and not have access to an unsecured wifi, albeit not a 100% on the go solution still better than wasting the money IMHO.
