With 3G and Wi-Fi on and heavy data usage (push mail with high frequency, Twitter, Web, etc) then less than a regular working day.

Very much less, I should think. I just got my new iPhone, and even with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and location services turned off the phone went through half of my battery's charge overnight. The only service I had turned on was Push for mail and contacts.

Admittedly, the phone network is giving me terrible reception -- I can see that the phone is connecting via EDGE most of the time and only gets 3G reception when I stand next to the window (this is not normal as I usually get 3G reception inside at this location).

    But still.

Turn 3G off. You don't really need it for everyday type things. Turn it on, only when you need to. That's what is eating most of your battery charge. If you are saying that it eats up 100% charge overnight on standby, there is something wrong, because my 4 year old 1st gen iPhone's charge standby time is about 4-5 days.

    P.S. Congrats on the phone.

Try connecting your old phone to an Exchange Server with Push enabled and watch that battery drain. Its the push that drains the battery a lot. I've noticed it in both, the older iPhone and the 3G

Apple markets the iPhone and Mobile Me as suitable for business use, what with high-speed internet (3G) and true push email.

Yet, Apple tells us to turn off 3G and turn off push to help the battery make it through the working day.

    A bit frustrating.

Have not used push, so can't say for sure. But that would make sense.

Hey, I was just pulling your leg...

My point was that the battery is weak to start with.
And you don't have the option to swap it with a second one.
Which leaves you with 1) continuously recharging or an 2) external battery.
    I don't like either option.

1 wears out the battery faster, 2 is huge, and another expense.
You're right. I also still use a 1st gen iPhone and the battery life is actually quite good. I hear the GPS and the 3G Modem is the big culprit when it comes to sucking the battery dry on the new one. I would recommend to always disable 3G and only switch it on if you need the extra bandwith. That saves battery and also frustration with etisalats dismal 3G coverage. It disconnects all the time (at least using the 3.5G Modem) anyways... I can almost set the watch to it, every 18 minutes it loses the signal and then goes back on, unless it's 2:00am (like right now)...

    Nobody knows yet.
We have been trying to find out.
It looks like nobody at Etisalat knows either.
Unless this is their way of making you buy a new phone every year, and killing off the last polar bear in one go.
    Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.
