Collection of WWDC reflections

As I was going through my RSS feeds for what people thought about the WWDC keynote and what was announced there, I thought I'd share a collection of them here.

LifeHacker says "Mac OS X Leopard: Leopard Desktop improvements heavy on the eye candy, light on the useful"

Scoble says "No Java. So, can’t run Kyte.tv’s application. Can’t run the Google Maps application I’m using on my Nokia. Can’t run something cool coming soon from eBay that I’m testing out. Can’t run Radar.net. Etc. Etc. No .NET apps. Er, no Silverlight apps. So, your favorite app from the Windows Mobile Smartphone you were hoping to give away won’t work."

TechCrunch: "Nothing earth shattering coming out of the Apple WWDC conference today in San Francisco."

Chris Pirillo: "Sarcasm aside, it seems that Apple is opening up a new browser holy war with the release of Safari for Windows. Is it just me, or is this particular announcement about three years too late? It’s difficult enough to get a site to look fine in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera! I’m excited, but I’m also not looking forward to it (and I’m also not very likely to switch from Maxthon)."

Bruce Stewart: "But was it just me, or can you sense the awkward dissatisfied silence from the whole audience when Steve said that they were going to allow third party development on the iPhone after all, but by this he means only browser-based web apps. I think for once in his life Steve didn’t do a great job of presenting his material to this audience. It is after all a very good thing that Apple has decided to provide URL-based access to the iPhone’s telephony, email, and other services, but that point really got lost on the crowd I think, who were expecting an SDK to access these things."

Dan Moren: "First off, you'll note that installing the Safari 3.0 beta is a little more complicated than drag-and-drop. The new version requires a restart—why? A tip from my colleague Dan Frakes points out that not only is a new version of Safari (and WebKit) installed, but also a new version of the Dock and the Dashboard client. Why? Presumably for the Web Clip functionality that Steve has showed off, though that's something that isn't available in the Beta."

Aaron Freedman: "Today, thanks to the announcements, or lack of announcements, at WWDC, Apple's stock price tanked almost 3.5% today, hitting $120.19 (though the stock has recovered 0.99% to $121.38 in after-hours trading at time of publishing). This was due to the fact that Wall Street, unlike Apple geeks, aren't too thrilled about Leopard, due to Apple's small PC market share and the new OS's low chance of expanding it. In fact, what Wall Street wanted most is what the Apple community is mostly sick of -- iPhone information. That, and new iPods, could have raised the stock price dramatically, as it did during this year's Macworld Expo. The one thing analysts did find somewhat interesting today was Safari's debut as a Windows app, though Steve Jobs never gave a target market share for the browser."

Pat Nakajima: "One of the new pages on Apple.com is a look at Leopard’s Unix abilities. Terminal 2 will bring tab support (finally!), as well as the ability to take advantage of Leopard’s native text and graphics capabilities. In addition to the performance enhancements, Terminal 2 will have a better interface for customization"

David Chartier: "After all the fuss over the new Mac OS X Leopard features, the rest of today's announcements and the Apple.com site redesign, I finally noticed that .Mac has taken a bit of a back seat on the site, at least for now. Note that along the new minimal site navigation bar at the top of Apple's site, .Mac no longer enjoys its own tab. Apple has of course done some house cleaning and simplified that navigation menu, and .Mac is now a sub-section under the main Mac tab, along with Apple's other Mac hardware and software products, and is featured under the "Why You'll Love A Mac" section. "

Rui Carmo: "I hereby predict (with a pretty good chance of being right, I think) that Safari 3.0 will become the Trojan Horse that will bring a bazillion Windows developers on board the iPhone platform, now that all the fuss about the iPhone SDK has been well and truly settled."

Fake Steve: "Let's be honest. It wasn't that good. I know it and you know it. I'm not going to spin it or lie to you. I've done better. Way better. But what can I do with the material I'm given? Okay, fair enough, maybe I raised everyone's expectations with all that pre-keynote smack talk about how I was going to blow minds. I should have just kept quiet. But that's not in my nature. Worse yet, I'm starting to look a little bit like John McEnroe and that worries me."

David Chartier: "One feature that is definitely not-so-tiny is something I'll dub 'fast switching' between Mac OS X and your Boot Camp Windows installation. While this isn't quite the built-in virtualization that some users were hoping for, it will minimize the startup, shutdown and boot times when switching between the two OSes. Detailed on Boot Camp's new features page, Apple has hooked their safe sleep feature into Boot Camp to allow Mac OS X to save all your open applications and windows, and then boot over into Windows. Once you're done in Windows, you can boot back over to Mac OS X and pick up where you left off - with all your open applications and documents put right back where you left them."

Giles Turnbull: "Anyway, with one final wave goodbye, Brushed Metal is out the back door and is unlikely to ever return. No tears from me, I never liked it anyway. Now we have the new “plastic gray” look, a big improvement. And, Steve says, it will be everywhere, as part of a new effort to bring back some consistency to Mac OS."

ya, i know iPhone is coming out in a couple of days, but Leopard was cool, but nothing to be proud about and hide "Top Secret" stuff for almost a year to come up with a new finder and a Desktop thats copied from another OS.... thats just not Apple... and then whats there to be so excited about iPhone when there is no indications yet of it working anywhere else but the US... now we have to wait AGAAAAAAAAAIN for god knows how long for a new iMac update, and iPod updates... hopefully not another silly 5.6G iPod with just a software upgrade... they are just taking too long...

WWDC, It's like you have been to a Huge Techno Party out in the middle of Desert, with Laser light show and crazy looking people , but instead they were playing Jazz!

Come OOOONN!!! Althou I am not a techno guy, but I am sure the party will blow my eye balls. Steve was that DJ on the stage who was playing low. People are jumping up and down, trying to bring to his attention that we need that Hit song NOW...

He wanted to bring people expectation low. This is a planed keynote, to be negative, so people will look out for his next keynote, they want to see if he will really sucks!!

It is indirect marketing, WWDC was neg marketing, which is good. That will create more fuss on his next (MacWorld Keynote) which will bring more people in to see if he is the real Job.

aaah. now I feel better that I got it out of my chest!

nicely said iDubai... i love the way u think... yes it was a beg set down this year at WWDC 07 but hopefully he will wakeup and smell the roses and have a special event some time next month after the iPhone sales... so he can get back in track from him last low preformance... although simplybahraini and i have discused this situation over and over for the past couple of days.. we have to remember that this confrence is ment for develepores so we shouldnt be so down that everything anounced was ment for developers and no new toys for us to play with :P

It was a waist of time for the developers too "I think" because they have seen 70% couple of months ago. Why big deal WWDC.

The more I think about it, the more I get frustrated.

WooohsaaaAA . WoOOhosSAAAA!!!!!!!

I think the big deal for developers, whether they like it or not, was the announcement of how they will develop apps for iPhone and Safari for Windows. For regular users, that's not interesting though.
