Help in Photoshop CS3

Hi. Not sure if this is the right place to post but I need some help in CS3.

I'm doing a montage and have a few pics in one canvas. I am trying to play around with each image, in particular I'm trying to crop a couple of them - but everytime I crop one image in a layer - the whole canvas takes up just that crop...

What am I doing wrong!?

Personally, I'd crop them separately then add them to the main montage.
I ran into the same situation as yours and that solution worked best for me.

You can use marque tool and copy paste the layer and delete original layer.....
