I think you are right from a financial viewpoint, Larsd.
Yes, Microsoft is a great investment.
And yes, the own the market share.
The problem is if they continue to copy rather than innovate, while they continue to eliminate the competition, it would be the end of both them and the industry.
Look at Internet Explorer, it was stagnant until FireFox came into play.
But the fact is people do care about what platform they are on, not because of the platform but because it changes everything afterwords.
Technology has a tendency to change your entire life.
For sure, MS has its pros (and Apple has its cons).
But Microsoft's success has always been attributed to being the cheaper solution, not the best.
And the computer world would be a much better place.
I don't think using a good idea is that bad.
Apple does it from time to time (Konfabulator is one instance).
But Microsoft copies and destroys, look at Netscape, Real, Lotus, WordPerfect, Novell, etc.
All products that Microsoft replicated and destroyed.
Hardly the ethics of a good guy.
MS products are so bad that they themselves use UNIX for their web servers.
That only comes to show how strong the product is, and how much faith they themselves have in it.
