There is much to admire about Microsoft and they've done a lot of good products. They've been clever and successful perhaps not because they made the best product, but because they've done something that is good enough. So whether they've done things that are "right" is up to interpretation, I think. In the sense of being successful, sure they've done things right. In the sense of building great products, not so much.

You're of course entitled to your opinion. If you think it's ridiculous just stay away from threads like these

I think you are right from a financial viewpoint, Larsd.
Yes, Microsoft is a great investment.
And yes, the own the market share.

The problem is if they continue to copy rather than innovate, while they continue to eliminate the competition, it would be the end of both them and the industry.
Look at Internet Explorer, it was stagnant until FireFox came into play.

But the fact is people do care about what platform they are on, not because of the platform but because it changes everything afterwords.
Technology has a tendency to change your entire life.

For sure, MS has its pros (and Apple has its cons).
But Microsoft's success has always been attributed to being the cheaper solution, not the best.
And the computer world would be a much better place.

I don't think using a good idea is that bad.
Apple does it from time to time (Konfabulator is one instance).
But Microsoft copies and destroys, look at Netscape, Real, Lotus, WordPerfect, Novell, etc.
All products that Microsoft replicated and destroyed.
Hardly the ethics of a good guy.

MS products are so bad that they themselves use UNIX for their web servers.
That only comes to show how strong the product is, and how much faith they themselves have in it.
    Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.

U said it perfect. Thats what Microsoft has been doing for all the previous years. Any new products u hear coming from Microsoft, be sure 100% it has been made somewhere before and they are just ripping it.

Microsoft does what its always good at -business-, ripping things, make them cheaper, throw out few ads and ur product is taking the market. well thats good in sales, but be careful M$, people are starting to notice there is products way too better.

UNIX, whatever!! who cares, this news is only for geeks!!! is that ridiculous too?

about the photos made on Mac, its not the idea of the image itself or the agency that made the images. Its about the principle. you r telling the world that everything/everyone is PC, and u didnt even manage to make ur ad on one?

Its like Nokia representative promoting Nokia Tube and behind the scenes answering his calls on iPhone. (would be awesome, wont it )

Of course it is ridiculous Microsoft's domination of the desktop and server market has managed to kill every other operating system. From a very high level look you only have two operating systems left Windows or UNIX. (When I say UNIX I mean: UNIX, BSD, Linux)

Microsoft's Latest release of their server platform has borrowed a lot from UNIX. They now have a striped version of their server, with no gui, and it runs basic network services like DNS, DHCP etc.

Plus they have power shell, which supports Perl, VB etc for scripting.

    +1 mate

I know that here is a company of mac lovers. But microsoft IS technology leader in software, you like it or not. And its extremely difficult to create operation system that will run on almost any cheap pc, cracked and patched with wrong drivers, without good network adapter, and manage to show good performance.

Hey they just did it with windows XP, no doubt it will be with Vista soon. So upcoming windows 7 (think about as Vista SP2) will prove it.

Mac also has strong points, but slowly all of these points coming to windows as well.
