Metallica's new album, Sep 12th, your thoughts? Amazon.com: Death Magnetic: Metallica: Music Dude, if this is anything like St. Anger I am going to commission a swat team to murder this band! Heard some live versions of a few songs and it's not half bad. They got rid of Bob Rock as a producer, and thats always a good thing since he tends to make every band sound like every other band.

Yeah I used to be a big fan. Metallica - Metallica (a.k.a. the black album) was their last good work. After that I felt that they became too commercial. And the Napster case was real a disappointment, like you said; they went after their fans!!!

A disagree somewhat, Their last good album was And Justice for all. The black album was ok, but the start of the downfall. I agree, they havent been a METAL band in forever, but this album sounds promising. I am very much pro P2P. I download so much it isnt even funny, still, If a band that meant alot to me as a kid finally releases something decent, I'd be very interested.

Black was as good as it gets for ANY heavy metal band. It just does not get better than that. I am against P2P and am a supporter of "you pay to play" policy for music. If one cannot afford or does not want to pay few cents for a song, he/she should be listening to the radio. As far as the previous few albums of Metallica, I agree that they are pretty weak. But I don't think it has anything to do with their Napster ordeal. After all, it would affect their popularity and not their ability to produce good music. I just think that Heavy Metal is dead and there is no more place for bands like Metallica in out day and age. Sad but true. Other bands and artists have attempted to keep up with times and were somewhat successful. Metallica failed. That just proves that nothing is eternal. Just want to point out that I am a huge Heavy Metal fan and generally a child of the 80's...

I agree with you Mushroom. Napster doesn't affect their ability to produce music. But I think they blamed Napster for their waning revenue. When in fact it was them to blame. As for the death of the Heavy Metal. You might be right. But there is enough HM fans for them to continue to prosper, had they known how.

I disagree. The Black Album wasnt a metal album, it was a hard rock album. If you can hear the blues in the music, its no longer metal. and you could not only hear the blues in the black album, but almost knew that what would come afterwards would not be metal. Thats if you just compare it to albums of the same time and genre. remember, Metallica were a THRASH metal band. where is the thrash in the black album? A Sittar? songs at 110 bpm? come on man. the black album was a transition album... from an amazing, some would argue the best thrash band ever... to eh. and bad eh at that. Heavy metal is dead? funny. Look up New Wave of American Metal Bands in wikipedia. When metal died in the US, it thrived in places like Sweden, and that country has given us some of todays biggest metal bands. When Cobain KILLED metal in the US, bands like Carcass, At the Gates, In Flames, and later Dark Tranquillity, and Arch Enemy (All swedish) were the supreme metal bands. When Bruce returned to Maiden in 2000 it was another break thru in metal. And every kid in the US who was secretly listening to the Swedes were now creating amazing musc. If you think Metal is dead I'd say you couldnt be more wrong. Today we have MORE and BETTER metal bands than ever. Darkest Hour is today better than Metallica ever was. Avenged Sevenfold has taken the mantle of the dark goth metal band from the likes of Alice cooper, Atreyu are basically a heavier more thought provoking Bon jovi, Trivium and Shadows Fall ARE the new Metallica and Megadeth. and I wish all these bands were small nobodys. They pack 20,000 plus seat arenas, and are staples of such tours as Ozz Fest and the Warped Tour. And thats just proper metal. If you want to add in the mix all the amazing hardcore, post-hardcore, and metalcore bands... today a metal kid has a much better, much more varried, and much more consistant selection. Back in the day Metal bands had to prove to music labels that ran crap like Madonna that they were sell-able. Today metal bands have their own labels. The century family of labels release nothing but metal and metalcore. MetalBlade also only releases metal. Not sure what you're listening to for the idea of "Metal is dead" to cross your mind, but its far from it. Just because 5 or so bands arent producing decent music doesnt mean the whole genre and sub genre has died. The way I've always seen it, is as long as Iron Maiden is still at the healm of Speed or Power metal, and Slayer are still producing rock solid thrash (And they are, to this day!) and the Swedish bands keep their melodic death metal pumping, we will have amazing bands. Those 3 elements, along with post hardcore bands like thrice, are what keep metal going today. and keep me playing, and keep every metal kid sane.

I respect your opinion and I clearly understand your point. However, there is no right or wrong here unfortunately. Its a matter of taste and opinion. When I say that the HM is dead, I don't mean that there are no good bands. I don't mean that people don't listen to either old or new HM. What I am saying is that is no longer anywhere NEAR THE MAINSTREAM is was back when Metallica was "considered" good. HM merged into new HM while some bands remained true to their roots and play the same way. However, it does not take much to put on MTV or any major radio station ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD and even in Sweden... I am sure you can tell where I am going with that. Heavy Metal is awesome and I love it. Heavy Metal is still being made today. But there is very little demand for it in its pure form. Bands like Metallica, who could not ride their grassroots train due to a number of reasons (band member swapping, fan disappointment and some others) had to make a tough decision and try to reinvent themselves. They pretty much failed each time on a different level with every album that came out after Black. Its a simple supply and demand rule. Before demand was high and supply was high. Now, demand is very low and supply is very low. Quality one even lower. Some people still think that Disco is not dead either and I am sure they have a good story or two and few bands from middle of nowhere in the US or somewhere else that play really good Disco action. So, as they say, lets agree to disagree.

Blue, I have to agree with Mushroom. You can say its not dead, but in a coma. Disco is WAY dead. As much as I enjoy metal, I have trouble finding good bands. Not because there aren't, but they are no longer mainstream. And things aren't going like they were before. Of course, many forms of music are evolutions of that. So it passed on the torch to good music.
