Unfortunate to hear.
I think his problem is with the aluminum.
A problem metal casings have is that they don't scratch, they dent.
So what might be a mild abrasion on a plastic case ends up being a drastic ding.

But the MBP itself is a VERY robust machine.
But in the end, all notebooks need some care (with the exception of the Panasonic ToughBook).

MBPs are heavy, yes.
Especially if you go for a 17".
And if you had an MBA, then nothing will seem portable.

But generally speaking, if you don't need the extra power I prefer to steer away.
