Lets go back to Magnus' second suggestion.
- Boot thru the Installation DVD
- Go to Disk Utility
mount Macintosh HD
- Go to Terminal
type: cd /Volumes
type: ls
you should see Macintosh HD here
if you do,
type: chmod 775 /Volumes/'Macintosh HD'
