I'll suggest first go to finder Preferences (Cmd ,) and see that you and check mark on both General and Sidebar preferences - Show these items on the Desktop: External disks.
Show these items in the Side Bar: External disks.
One thing for sure when a disk is playing tricks on you, its high time you make a backup of it before its fully 'Dead'.
