You might want to check the available space in the backup drive. I noticed in my system, a Mac Pro with 1TB drive, Time Machine hourly backups can reach upto 400GB with little drive changes done from my side.

So check the available space and monitor the menu bar icon for Time Machine to see the amount backed up. It should delete old obsolete records.
